I've owned my '94 Grand Am (3100 as well) since '03 when it had 86K. I now have over 214K and drive it hard everyday. Slick50 every 50-70K. Once in a RARE while, I've mixed 1 quart of of the high miles oil (claiming to have Slick50 in it) with the rest being straight conventional.
I prefer a BOSCH oil filter (run one probably 70% of the time). Change the oil between 3K-5K miles.

To be honest, I have been 100% pleased with the engine performance and longevity. I have never ran a synthetic in ANY of my cars and currently I don't have any plans.

With the Grand Am mileage being what it is, I don't see a benefit in high mile oil products.

BTW - I have never Seafoamed a car either. But when doing service like LIM gaskets or head gaskets, I clean up all the parts to the best of my ability (almost clean enough to eat off of).
yep 3100, i try not to beat too hard on the car. I want to make it last as long as possible, just seeing if theres anything worth trying. I'll probably just keep on conventional and until i notice an issue i'm not gonna change. My dads van he used to have had 9x,xxx miles and without high mileage oil, oil would over time kind of just diaspeer. Wasn't leaking, wasn't burning just seemed to literally disapeer unless it had high mileage in it.

The 3100 and 3400 are pretty tough little engines with a small list of "common" problems (basically being the LIM gaskets). I'm really impressed how well they last just by changing the oil.
As mentioned, my Grand Am has over 214K, we sold my wife's '94 Grand Am beginning of 2011 and it had 177K at that time (still ran great). Knowing what I do about the 3100 (and how well it's done for us), my wife is driving a 3400 in a '05 Impala we bought with over 150K on it. Still runs great, just keep the oil changed between 3K-5K.

Actually Pennzoil has one of the better additive packages and is what I'm currently using. I'm running the yellow bottle conventional in it. I ran Valvoline white bottle conventional before that.

I also refuse to use Mobil 1. I used it years ago in my 98 chevy truck with the 5.7L and it made the engine noisy, it used more oil, and my oil analysis results were worse compared to the conventional oil I used after it. I was not getting my money's worth. I'm sure it protects an engine fine but I won't use it anymore and I was a huge fan of it for years.

Go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and read everything you would want to know about oil.
