I heard about Pennzoil being paraffin based years ago so never used their oil. I've seen 2 engine failures because Mobil 1 turned to gel in the crankcase so never use it either. I've been using Valvoline for years and have never had an engine failure due to a lubrication problem. If your engine has less than 125,000 miles you can enroll in the Valvoline engine guarantee program. There are 3 tiers depending on the type of oil you use, and they will guarantee your engine up to 300,000 miles. If they are willing to stand behind their product like that I think it says a lot.

I run the 5w-30 Mobil 5000 (used to be called Clean 5000?)

Just keep on top of your oil changes, and nothing should turn to sludge and gel and crap. Keep an eye on everything, don't just see that it should last X amount of miles and wait that long.

Honestly with that Pennzoil, if you have it, might as well chuck it in for an oil change.

I don't have it right now its in the car, which i should be draining it soon. As stated in the witner storage thread i will not start the car n just drain the oil and filter and change both. I'm contemplating when to do it because the rest of march is forcaster in the mid to high 50s or even mid 60s so I'm itching to drive it but I ususally leave my cars stored untila bout may. I'll probably pick up the mobil 5000 or the high mileage. I change the oil and filter every 3k in the monte...well I plan to I havent even put 500 miles on it yet so yeah lol thanks for all the advice guys. Whenever I do decide to pull it out of storage its getting frresh supercharged oil which i got from zzp (the GM kind), fresh oil and filter, new air filter, the rims put on the supercharged decal put on the front and of course a cleaning and leather conditioning. Anything else I'm missing? I have to reinstall the battery which will be a PITA its an Ac Delco battery that was still good when I pulled in and pay the horrible tag fee of $298

On the subject of oils, are there any benefits to running high mileage oil. Hopefully this summer i can finally start doing my own oil changes instead of having em done at the garage.

High Mileage oils usually have some cleaners in them. I use them, and when I seafoamed the engine barely any smoke even came out, so it definitely keeps it clean.

Whether it's the oil or not, I'm not going to change and find out lol

I've run Pennzoil Ultra/Platinum in my Monte for 30-35k (5-6 oil changes) with no issues whatsoever. My car has 106k on it and has never had a motor related issue. It actually sounds a lot better on Pennzoil than it does on Mobil 1 or Amsoil. Just my .02

You have a 3100 if I recall?

I've owned my '94 Grand Am (3100 as well) since '03 when it had 86K. I now have over 214K and drive it hard everyday. Slick50 every 50-70K. Once in a RARE while, I've mixed 1 quart of of the high miles oil (claiming to have Slick50 in it) with the rest being straight conventional.
I prefer a BOSCH oil filter (run one probably 70% of the time). Change the oil between 3K-5K miles.

To be honest, I have been 100% pleased with the engine performance and longevity. I have never ran a synthetic in ANY of my cars and currently I don't have any plans.

With the Grand Am mileage being what it is, I don't see a benefit in high mile oil products.

BTW - I have never Seafoamed a car either. But when doing service like LIM gaskets or head gaskets, I clean up all the parts to the best of my ability (almost clean enough to eat off of).

I've been running Mobil 1 5w-30 Full Synthetic lately and the engine ran quite a bit better going to that from other more generic brands
