With many W-Body/3800/Grand Prix/Regal/Impala/Monte Carlo sites shutting down, I have been seeing a loss of tribal knowledge that was archived within those fallen sites. My intent is that this first post is used as a “living” document to share and update some of the disappearing tribal knowledge about the platform (these can be things from good recommendations on maintenance products to modifications). This is NOT intended to take credit from the originals who pioneered these solutions (unfortunately, it is difficult to credit the original founds of this data).
This thread is targeted to the 2000-2007 6th Generation Monte Carlo and the other “sibling” cars (Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevy Impala, Buick Regal, Buick Century, Oldsmobile Intrigue with a LA1/3400, L36/3800, L67/3800 Supercharged). This thread will be locked. If changes need made, please message the MCF Staff and we will happily make updates.
Notes to MCF Staff: If anyone is going to link back to a thread for more information, if it is NOT already on MonteCarloForum, please start a new thread on MonteCarloForum, give credit/link to your source and then copy/paste the data and pictures in that new thread. This will ensure that the data remains safe as long as MCF exists. If something needs removed, please use the strike through option and make a note (this way if someone looks for it here it is not gone and updated information is provided).

Flipping the Upper Motor Mount Bushings
Note: This is for the person who wants to reduce the engine rocking, and either wants rubber instead of poly to reduce NVH or wants this as it is a free mod.

Improved Front Lower Control Arm Bushing: MOOG K200787
Purpose Notes: The original bushing is rubber molded into a metal ring. With the way the control arm moves, this will flex the rubber to eventually separate from the metal ring. This MOOG design is not a rubber bushing. It functions like a ball joint and avoids the common failure of the original style bushing. Highly recommended, even when replacing with fully loaded/new control arms; if they do not have this bushing, the upgrade is worth the time and spending.

Anti-Pogo Washers: ZZPerformance or GM Sub-frame washer PN 10203412 (both options are different)
Purpose Notes: To resolve a “pogo” bouncing effect commonly found when using lowering springs. Known to also help firm up a stock suspension.
Comparison Notes: ZZP Anti-Pogo Washers
Shorter Dog Bones: ZZPerformance or GM Part Number 10247084 (found on the 2000 era Chevy Venture Van)
Purpose Notes: Help with changing the alignment of the engine and transmission, commonly desired by people who have lowered their car.
Permanent Cabin Air Filter Water Fix: GM Part #15794785
Note: This modification is using a piece designed for a newer W-Body vehicle and fitting it to a 2000-2005 Monte (and other W-Body cars). When this fix was new, this was a $4 part from any dealership. In the year 2023, it was learned that this part has been discontinued and towards the end of its availability, the price had skyrocketed. At this time, January of 2024, the cars that have this are still available in the salvage yards to obtain one.
Link with Information: Permanent Cabin Air Filter Water Problem Fix
Rear Defroster Fix
Note: There are two common rear defroster issues. One is obvious, the tab on the rear glass coming off. The other is the circuit breaker for it failing. The circuit breaker is not as obvious to locate, the link provided shows this fix.
Link with Information: Rear Defroster Fix (Circuit Breaker)
L36 (3800 Non-Supercharged) Water Pump Upgrade: L26 Water Pump ACDelco 88926207
Notes: The factory L36 pump has a stamped steel impeller. The L26 pump features a cast aluminum impeller to help improve coolant circulation. Recommended to verify part in the box before purchase.
Link with Information: Water Pump Fun
3800 Solid Rubber Lower Motor Mount: Napa - Part Number 6121730
Notes: Not sure if this will work on other engine options. The factory lower motor mount is hydraulic (rubber filled with oil). As it ages, the mount will develop a leak. Some vendors do offer poly mounts, but some people prefer a solid rubber one (to avoid some of the engine vibration and potential leaking).
This is difficult to find. Sites like RockAuto have listings for solid mounts but that is not always what is in the box (you can validate by shaking the mount and listening for fluid). Napa's site claims this is made by Pioneer Automotive Part Number 602796 (this can also be found on RockAuto’s site under the name “Pioneer” as of 1/8/2025, unconfirmed what Rock is actually shipping).
L36 (3800 Non-Supercharged) Aluminum Valve Covers: Source from the L36/3800 powered F-bodies (1995-2002 Camaro and Firebird).
Notes: This is mostly cosmetic. But some believe it helps with radiating heat from the engine. The F-Body was the only L36 in the U.S. to offer factory aluminum valve covers. This does NOT work for the L67/Supercharged 3.8, only the naturally aspirated 3.8.
3100/3400/3800 Intake Gaskets: Aluminum Core Gaskets (Fel-Pro is a popular and trusted source)
Notes: The factory gaskets are nylon/plastic and tend to fail around the water jackets. Metal core gaskets are obvious (it is metal with the rubber seals).
L36 (3800 Non-Supercharged) to L26 Aluminum Upper Intake Swap: Source from any L26 (3800 Series III) with the aluminum upper intake
Notes: The aluminum is resistant to the aging plastic upper intake. This does take some modifications to make this work.
Link with Information: L26 UIM/L67 Throttle Body Swap Guide (Pic Heavy)
L36 and L26 (3800 Non-Supercharged) Blocking Coolant Ports/Enlarging Coolant Bypass Modification
Notes: This is to avoid coolant entering the throttle body, avoiding a source of failure on a coolant travel that has no known effect on performance or drivability. Expanding the coolant bypass is not required, but can help improve engine cooling.
Link with information: Love for the Black Monte (post 30 and 31)
L36 (3800 Non-Supercharged) Plastic/Nylon Upper Intake Notes:
Notes: Common failure with this intake is the wall between the EGR stove pipe and the coolant passages getting brittle and leaking coolant into the engine. Some upper gasket kits include a different EGR stove pipe that is narrow and intended to keep the heat off the plastic intake. Some vendors have revises the intake to thicken that wall or add additional re-enforcement. Two other options are to use the L26 aluminum Upper Intake Swap or to block the coolant ports.

L36 Plastic Upper Intake Explosion/Fuel Pressure Regulator: GM Bulletin 03054B
Notes: GM issued a recall for 1998-2000 Buick Park Avenue, LeSabre, Pontiac Bonneville; 1998-99 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight; and 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Impala model vehicles equipped with a 3.8L V6 (RPO L36 - VIN Code K) engine. This is pertaining to an issue with a high failure rate of Fuel Pressure Regulators in those vehicles. The failure results in fuel vapors leaking through the vacuum line into the upper intake. With the right condition during engine start could cause a small explosion that will destroy the upper intake and risk of fire. Given the age of these cars, the concern documented most likely should result in a routine inspection. To inspect, remove the vacuum line from the Fuel Pressure Regulator and inspect for wet fuel or strong fuel odor. If found, replace this part immediately.

3800 (all Supercharged and Non-Supercharged): Dorman Aluminum Coolant Elbows 47065HP
Notes: The factory and factory style elbows are plastic/nylon, which tends to crack and leak in time. The aluminum ones last longer or indefinitely.
Aluminum Subframe Bushings: LS4King.com
Notes: Performance mod intended to improve handling and stability of the engine cradle. Works only with the aluminum sub frame found on 2000-2006 Monte Carlos (and other select W-Body cars).

Factory Leather Shift **** for 2000-2005 Monte Carlo: Same Shift **** from 00-05 Grand Am and late model Bonnevilles
Upgraded Stainless Steel Braided Brake Lines: Goodridge (sold by ZZP); Russell Street Legal Brake Line Kits 692220 (fits 2000-2005 Monte, possibly more Montes; fits other W-Body cars)
Notes: The Russell kit has end pieces that look like the factory lines. The Goodridge ones look more universal fit.
1998-2002 Front F-Body Caliper Swap
Notes: This is desired for the dual piston use to help improve contact with the rotor. On the 2000-2005 Monte and Impala, this requires the F-body calipers, pads and longer front brake hoses. The caliper brackets for the F-Body calipers will need to be drilled and tapped to fit the bolts used on the W-Body knuckles. The factory rotors on the Monte are the same as the F-Body. These calipers might offer a weight difference as the body is aluminum, unlike the factory calipers.
GXP Front Rear Break Swap: Sourced from 2005-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP models
There are some sites on the internet documenting this for other W-body cars. ZZPerformance also sells a kit for this.
Cadillac Brembo 4 Piston Caliper Swap: Sourced from the non-V models of the 2013-2016 Cadillac ATS and the 2014-2016 CTS.
Notes: When these calipers are used in conjunction with 2005-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP rotors, you have an effective 12.7" Big Brake Upgrade with 4 Piston Aluminum Calipers on the cheap. 18" wheels or larger are required for clearance. Possible brake hose change required.
There are some sites on the internet documenting this for other W-body cars. ZZPerformance also sells a kit for this.
1999-2005 Grand Am Rear Caliper Swap
Notes: Rarely used or known mod. This is typically done for appearance (as the cooling fins help match with the F-Body front calipers). These are aluminum calipers with a very tiny weight reduction. They use the brake pads and rotors as the 2000-2005 Monte. Requires grinding away some material of the Grand Am caliper bracket to properly fit on the knuckle.
U-Body (Pontiac Aztek/Buick Rendezvous) Front Aluminum Impact/Crash Bar Swap
Notes: Done by few to reduce weight in the front of the car. This aluminum bar has to be used upside down on the W-Body car and removing an alignment pin from the aluminum bar. If you wish to use all 3 mounting spots on all the frame horns, a drilling a new hole is required.

2000-2007 Monte Carlo Spoiler Swap
Notes: Many people desire a vertical spoiler for their 6th generation Monte. If you have a 00-05 with a “surfboard” spoiler, it shares the same bolt pattern as the 2006-2007 vertical spoiler and is a direct fit/swap. The 00-05 vertical spoiler has a unique bolt pattern and would require drilling new holes and filling old one to swap over.

Remove/Delete the Factory Resonator
Notes: One a stock exhaust, it is common for the factory resonator to develop a hole with age or rust through. Removing this and having an exhaust shop replace it with a piece of pipe has proven to add a tiny increase in performance. It can come at some sacrifice to the sound of the exhaust (some do not like the sound as they find it droning). The change in the exhaust sound appears more noticeable in the single muffler configuration. This should not change emissions, only sound. But some locations may have very strict laws/regulations on modified exhaust work. Please check with local restrictions before considering this.
