RE: gutted out intake
This guy did a great write up for gutting the stock airbox. It's for an Impalla, but it's the same parts.

I also read all the other stuff he posed in his "how to" section. It's all very well written, and I will be using that for a few mods and repairs of my own!

I live in WI so we get a little snow here as well. I have the Wizaired CAI and it has been great. I know of others that have FWI's and they haven't seen any problems with snow or water. These are also much more succeptible (sp?) to water problems but don't seem to have them.

FWI's all depend on where you put the filter in the fender. if it is low splashing water can soak the filter (happend to me) if it is shielded from the bottom (fender splash shield is not good enough!) then it should be ok.... your best method for protecting a FWI is keep it as high as possible and keep the splash shields inplace.if you can tuck your head under the car and see the filter... you will have water problems!

RE: gutted out intake
I live in Michigan- plenty of rain and snow! I checked the airbox the first time I drove in a hard rain after modifying it-everything was dry. I may drill a drain hole in the bottom, just in case. Just for the record, this is how I cut the airbox on my 06 3.9:
