The Battle Hymn of the Republic is always a powerful song to hear. Even now I still get chills down my back when I hear that or the National Anthem. Thankfully, they changed the law a few years back so that off duty (as in wearing civilian clothes) military as well as veterans are allowed to salute during the national anthem.

I'm reading this thread on my iphone for the first time. For some reason, random smilies are poping up in my first post. Smilies that I didn't put there. I can see them on my iphone, but they're not visible on my desktop with Internet Explorer. Not sure what's going on.

I appologize if anyone saw them and thought I was making fun of this subject.

Tomorrow being the 12 year anniversary of 9/11, I thought I would revive this thread for everyone to share their memories of that day.

Please also take a look at my original post on the first page for a couple links.

On that day 12 years ago, I came home at 8:00 am from working midnight shift. Being tired as usual, I went to be and turned on the radio to listen to my favorite morning radio show, Drew & Mike. A popular radio show from Detroit, MI.

They always had a tv running in studio with the sound turned off. About 8:45, the phone screener yelled out for Drew & Mike to look at the tv. They had CNN on. The first thought was it was just a really bad fire in one of the WTC towers. So I turned on my tv to CNN also.

I was in bed watching CNN when the second plane came into view, and hit the second tower. It was an awful feeling knowing that I had just watched this live, and not pre-recorded. Like many people, I wanted to think I was watching some bad movie. But knew it was actually happening.

I found myself thinking, this is what people must have felt like decades ago when Pearl Harbor got hit.

It's strange how often we measure various things as "pre-9/11" and "after 9/11".

I remember being home from work due to illness, still living with my parents and seeing the live footage (no delay as once in a while some language was put in or you saw people making decisions no one wants to make). I've heard stories of how loved ones got calls from family members at WTC to say good bye. It really was a horrific situation.

I remember seeing people jumping from the windows of the WTC, live on tv. That's where I wanted to think I was watching a movie, and those were stunt men. But I knew that it wasn't.

I thought to myself at the time... How bad must it have been in that building, where the better choice is to jump to a certain death?

I too remember that day like it was yesterday....

I was still working then... I was working at the MGM Grand Casino here in Detroit.. As I got out of the shower I took a quick look at the tv.. That I usually had on to catch the news weather etc..before I headed off to work... I use to start work at 12 noon.. and worked til 8pm.... What I saw I couldn't believe my eyes... I too like you Lou thought I was watching a movie...until I recognized the news personals voices .. I also saw the 2nd plane crash into the 2nd tower!
I was literally freaking out... I also saw oh so many people leaping to there deaths! Then, another thought jumped into my brain... directly next door to the MGM Casino was the IRS building and I thought...what if they deceide to attack it? we also have massive refinerys in and around my neighborhood...
I almost did not go to work that day.... But I did anyway.... I was shakeing in boots all throughout the day.... Even in our then lunch room was almost directly attached to the IRS building (with in inchs) and watching the TV's in the Lunch room just increased my paranoia! As a dealer ... I had to maintain my composer and do the job I was being paid to do.... There are/were many Iranian people playing at my tables that day...It was so hard for me to curb my thoughts about just what happened as I am now thinking the worst of these people and the way they live there lives... What did they hope to gain? and maybe at any moment they could maybe possibly turn violent at my tables? Of course I couldn't wait to get off work and bury my face in the news!

I didn't lose anyone in the tragedy that horrific day....
But my hearts and prayers go out for those who lost soooo many loved ones.. To this day... I still get the chills just to think about it!
I had a stepson who spent 2 yrs of his life in Afghanistan.... Thanks fully he's now home safe and sound!

I'd just like to thank all those who have given there lives in the name of freedom...and to those Men and Women still fighting the fight to keep us free! So, that we are able to sit comfortably in our own homes knowing there out there doing there job that allow us to do everyday things that a lot of people take for Granted!
Thanks to the Veterans that were lucky enough to come home and enjoy the very freedom they provided! God Bless America!
