Some times you just have to walk away , I passed on 1950 mercury top chop for $ 1600 because it had a cadillac engine and not running ..

I had a '68 CS/GT for 2 mo.s in '78. I bought it for $1500.00. Cleaned it up, buffed the paint out. Horrible goldish green color w/white CS/GT Stripes. Nice 302 done over by Shelby. Lots of people said its not a real Shelby. Well, Yes & No. They were build for California Dealers by Shelby. (That's what I heard.) Since I'm a Chevy Guy -- I sold it for $2900.00
-Almost doubled my money. It was a fun car. Chicks dug it -- even with the awful green color ! LOL!

Pretty much resigned to the fact this isn't going to happen. No place to work on it and no place to garage it. Unless I sold the Duce and that's not going to happen

I can understand completely Tadd. A couple years ago, a guy a few blocks from me had a '58 or '59 Edsel for sale cheap. It ran great, and the body was decent. Not missing any parts or anything. It looked kinda tired; needed some restoration work to get it back to 100%. The chrome looked like it needed to be re-chromed too. I wanted to buy it in the worst way and restore it.
But harsh reality set in. No place to store it, or work on it. Plus I didn't have the money needed to do all the work it needed. Had to drive by it everyday for about 6 months until somebody took it away on a flatbed.

Those cars are worthless and useless in everyway, so you should refer the guy to me nad let me take on that burden for you!!!! :-D
More seriously....
The market just isn't there since the economy collapsed. California specials (CS) are actually pretty rare, as you said, and they're really good cars. The newer CS cars were really modeled on these '68 CS cars. They had several neat features that make them collectible... tail lights being hte most obvious. Plus, they were only sold in California, and usually don't have much rust in them.... if they stayed in Cali, that is. Before 2008, I'd say restored, that car was probably worth $30-50 on a Barret Jackson.
What gets that car is that it is original 289... if it was the later model with the 302, it would be a little better, but the engine that would put that car into 6 figure territory would be the 390 GT engine.... or better yet, the 428 Cobra Jet.
