GM Debuts HCCI Combustion Technology, Saves 15% In Fuel Consumption
Filed Under: Tech, Trends, General Motors, Future Vehicles, Automotive News, Alternative Propulsion August 24th, 2007 9:13 AM 9 Comments

General Motors unveiled a new engine combustion technology today called homogeneous charge compression ignition, or HCCI. The HCCI first drive occured in a production-based Saturn Aura and an Opel Vectra, both with a modified 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder engine. GM claims that when this type of engine technology is combined with variable valve timing, direct injection, electric cam phasing, and pressure sensing, it can provide up to a 15% savings in fuel consumption “while meeting future emissions standards.”
How does HCCI work? Essentially, it’s a sparkless ignition system, although the engine needs spark at certain speeds and temperatures. Further, engine performance isn’t controlled by changing spark, it’s controlled by way of changing the mixture of fuel and air and the temperature of that combination. GM’s release states that “An HCCI engine ignites a mixture of fuel and air by compressing it in the cylinder. Unlike a spark ignition gas engine or diesel engine, HCCI produces a low-temperature, flameless release of energy throughout the entire combustion chamber. All of the fuel in the chamber is burned simultaneously. This produces power similar to today’s conventional gas engines, but uses less fuel to do it.”
We haven’t had the chance to drive an HCCI vehicle yet, but we look forward to providing a review.

GM Reducing Pick-up & SUV Production

For the first seven months of the year, General Motors’ pick-up truck and SUV sales dropped 9%, overall. Sales of the larger pick-up trucks dropped even more: sales of the larger Silverado models dropped 29%. In response, GM has offered increasingly generous incentives on these models and predicts that it’s August pick-up sales will rebound. A GM spokesperson also said that large truck sales had increased “significantly.” Even so, sales are below current production levels, (...)

Mid-Engine C7 Corvette?

That’s the rumor – again. Every new Corvette since the C3 has been rumored to be mid-engine. Zora Arkus-Duntov, the first Chief Engineer for Corvette, wanted a mid-engine design and Chevrolet built a stunning mid-engine design study in the seventies. Bu

i've heard rumors (i dont know about the states, but up here in canada) of a new SUV tax, the governement is going to tax any people driving large vehicles than they need to, like if your driving a hummer or a 4 door huge truck that puts out lots of emmissions and you dont need it, SUV's are useless, if you have to seat lots of people they're saying get a mini-van or a station wagon (which i completely dissagree with) but they want to make it a cleaner place up here...so they're going to start a new tax to deter people from driving the suv's and huge trucks
