Default Hello everyone. Retired vet here who just loves cars.

I am rebuilding the top end of my 350 and I'm kinda lost. I have 350 4bolt main. Compression is 8:5 I think. I already ordered some AFR aluminum heads. 64cc 195c. I have a edelbrock 650 currently. Stage 1 high rise edelbrock intake. 1 3/4 headers shorty. Th350 transmission with a 2200 stall. Im looking to change the cam and will eventually switch the carb to a Holley. My motor is listed at 249hp. I think with my current set up I'm probably about 300ish hp. Never had the car tuned. Its a crate 350 from Jegs. B&m 350 transmission. Motor has less than 5k miles on it. Transmission has less than 2k miles on it. Where do I go from here? It's goin to be a everyday car with some power. What size cam should I go? Should I get my heads shaved or ported? I plan to tackle this job on my own too. Thru my experience with shady ppl I'd rather break my own car trying something new. Any advice would help me out. I can turn a wrench so im decent at engine work lol but im not a pro and I don't know about compression and combustion. I'm learning tho.

Welcome to the Forum. It sounds like you a good combination already and I'm not going to tell you what you should upgrade to. You know your specs for the 350 and TH350; are the aluminum heads ready to install? If so, you should have specs for a range of cams. I would think the heads don't need any work because they were designed for aftermarket non-stock performance. Consider these factors as you research cams: Are you running AC and vacuum power brakes? What RPM range do/will you mostly drive in? What are your rear gears? A cam with a power curve above your normal range will possibly be disappointing. Most of the cam makers have recommendations for certain combinations that you may be able to customize - I haven't looked for a new cam in several decades but will be in the next several years for a 396 project I picked up. At the very least, most cam makers have a help line that will provide recommendations. FWIW, I have a Comp Cams set in my 283 4-speed Chevelle that has performed well for more than 30k miles with some drag strip runs.

Tell us about your car, why do you have a Monte? Upload some photos.
