350 help/advice wanted/needed
i saved what i thought was a running 305 from beign melted down turns out to be a 350, we pulled the heads off to make it a bit lighter so we could man handle it outa the back of a van but the motor had if i remeber right 462 heads on it and i have a set of 416 heads from my stock 305 now i know they are both crack prone but the heads off the 350 smoke alot upon start up unlike my 305 heads that did a small bit now i don't have the fund to get either checked or machined i was wonder pro's/cons of either and what you all think, this is going to a verry mild street budget build for now basicly a stock 350 with a 600cfm edlebrock carb, headers if funds alow, and vac advance hei dist with accell coil

could you post the whole casting number? i have a feeling those 305 heads are going to have a smaller intake valve than the 350 heads and a small combustion chamber. im wondering where it would put you at compression wise. are they smoking due to a valve guides or valve seals? cause that shouldnt be expensive. personally id want the head with the bigger valves. the higher compression would be nice but if you pick up a cam for the car even with low compression it should make decent power. i think the better choice would be to pick up a rebuild kit for butt cheap and put some flat top pistons, a baby cam ,change the guides and seals, and slap it together till you could afford a better set of heads.

well i had talked with a few people from other forums and yes the 416 heads have a bit small heads and runners but would be fine, and after talking to my dad he informed me that my bro had knocked over my other set of heads while in the garage a few time and them beign verry prone to cracking i'm going to run the 416 heads to be safe, also from what i read since the 350 is a low compressiin smog motor it started at like 8:5 and trowing the 416 58cc heads will bump it to 9:2-9:5
