Default Check engine light

05 supercharged ss monte Check engine light came on auto zone said it was code for bad gas cap. Replaced w/new cap was ok for couple weeks now back on they said says bad gas cap lol. Difference now is when I get out I smell a strong gas smell at front of car. Any ideas? I really don't want to waste $ on another gas cap, don't think that's the problem & never was. Disabled & strapped for cash. Car now parked, tags just expired and I know it won't pass inspection w CE light on.

I battled this issue for a few years, changed everything regarding the EVAP system including the gas cap. If it smells like gas from the front of the car, check the EVAP Purge Valve Solenoid. When I went to remove the solenoid, the tubing that ran to it basically crumbled in my hands. I went ahead and replaced all the tubing and the solenoid. Easy 10 minute job.

Also make sure you buy a GM gas cap, the ones at auto stores not the same!

If you are smelling gas up front then it could also be the fuel pressure regulator this is the one that makes the Plenum explode, I am attaching a link for the google search I did so you can read about it there are alot of these that have happened maybe you can catch it before it happens.
