Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day: This is Pete Hamilton in the pits in his Superbird, in the same story recounted above.
Considering how few people are in the grandstands, this is either lat ein the race and a lot of people left, or during the Twin 125 race.
I believe it's a Don Hunter photo....

I don't believe Andretti ever drove a Montego. I like them okay...... just don't love them like I do a Torino!!
I also have an affinity for the 80's Thunderbird but I don't show it very much. I also have a picture of the '78 Montego that Pearson crashed in the Daytona 500 that year coming up.

Back to the convertible story, I wish I could remember who it was. While taking the tour at Daytona last month, guide was telling us about them racing the converts, one driver was paid to cut his roof off to make it a vert. Something happened during the race and he was just verily able to hang on and stay in his seat the rest of the race. He wasn't paid a lot by today's standards and said he earned that money...

Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day: The Petty's stand around the destroyed car of Lee Petty that went oer teh wall in Daytona, 1960. You can still see the factory seat still installed in the car....
Uncertain of the original source.

Lee Petty? Yeah, he was in the hospital for months though.... and never raced again. He becmae more of Petty's supervisor.
Lee Petty got to where he didn't go to races much, but then Adam started that one cup race at Texas, and Lee was there... then died a couple weeks later. About 2 months later, Adam died in New Hampshire.... 2000 was not a good year for the Petty's....

Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day. You know I can't stray from my beloved Torino's for too long....
How about a shot of Richard Petty's 1969 Torino Talladega being inspected before the Daytona 500 of the same year?
