Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day: Lee Roy Yarbrough celebrating his 1969 Daytona 500 win! It was one of his then record 7 superspeedway wins of 1969.... he ended up being Ford's Driver of the Year and several other rewards before falling off the racing scenee in 1971-1972.

Looks like a good ol' Don Hunter photo to me...

Lookn forward to the 2013 Fantasy season to begin!

The late 60's early 70's had to be my favorite years ever...

Go Go boots,Hot Pants Ya Baby.... I would mind being Lee Roy Yarbourough back then!

Why do you think he fell away from the racing sceen?

Long story.... basically, he lost his way when the manufacturers pulled out in '71... never did find a decent ride. He was just antiquated... his style didn't match up wtih the way racing was going.... he, Charlie Glotzbach, Darel Daringer... heck, Cale Yarbroough went to driving ASAC and Indy for a while...

He ended up going bankrupt and moving back into a "slum" in Jacksonville with his mother.... arrested numerous times for drinking... ended up going crazy and nearly killing his mother... he ended up being deemed incompetent to stand trial, and died in an insane asylum in the 80's.

He is so far the only Daytona 500 winner to ever be arrested on the grounds of a felony.

The long story can be read here...

Did you read the whole thing? It takes a few paragraphs to figure it out.... it's very much like the author wants you to feel like you're sitting in the rooms talking to all the people involved. He also switches points of view rather quickly and without warning. But it's interesting nad sad if you read it all...
