Transmission-Hard Upshifts
98 Monte Carlo - 75000 mi.
Need Help w/ possible solution to problem.
Occasionally after a long drive, the transmission upshifts from 1 to 2, and 2 to 3 real hard. I'm pretty sure it even does it from 3 to 4.
Seems like it also takes longer to shift with the same acceleration.
Once the car cools down, it's all back to normal.
Fluid is at proper level, doesn't smell burnt, and looks fairly clean. Any ideas ???
Thanks

Thanks for the reply to harsh upshifts.
I bought the car 2 years ago and I seriously doubt the previous owner did any transmission service.
At this time it has 76,000 miles on it.
Besides a transmission fluid flush and a new filter, what else constitutes a major sevice package? Do they adjust bands or anything like that?
Thanks again. A little service may go a long way.
P.S. Once the car cools down the harshness ceases.
Turning the ignition off and back on doesn't cure it.

I agree, a flush would be a good place to start.
When the fluid is cold, it is thicker which makes it easier for the clutches to grab. When it gets hot, it thins out and you feel harsher shifts.
I'm not a trans guy, but I don't think there are any externally adjustable bands on that. A basic flush with new filter would be good. But also, a lot of transmission shops will do a free test drive to tell you what you need, so I'd try that and see what they think. Ask around and get a good, reputable trans shop.
