Default Ticking noise

Hey, i have a ticking nose that seem to be ticking as fast as my RPM's. Also sounds more prominent when I'm directly under the engine and can kind of feel it if I touch the oil pan.

I have the piston slap/lifter noise that seem to go away after the engine heats up (which is A LOT slower then the above mentioned ticking) so this leads me to believe that it can either be my timing chain or my oil pump.

could the oil pump ware down to the point where something starts ticking or do you guys think the timing chain is now lose enough that it is rattling around OR do you think its something completely different all together?

I will be tearing apart the top end in a few weeks to drop in ported intakes w/ 65mm TB, so tearing down further is not a problem.

BTW, 2000 Monte LS, LA1 with 240,000 km (150,000 miles)

Thanks!!

Loose valve/rocker? Does it tick when in park/neutral or drive?

could be a rocker. take off the valve covers, and check/ adjust them. just saw jester posted that while i was typing.

I notice it more in Park (i am under the car )

Im no expert but it seems way to fast for one rocker at idle speeds.. Unless they all got lose? Do u guys suggest changing to chain anyways with the amount of miles i have on it? Like i said ill be taring the top end apart in a few weeka anyways and will double check all that stuff then...

if youre tearing the motor apart doing the timing chain is always a good thing. checking the rockers would be fairly easy, and free to do. i wouldnt wait to check them though. ive seen them back off all the way to the point that the nut had come off, and the rocker was laying inside the head broken. luckily nothing had worked its way into the motor itself. you could also post a video of the car, and the noise for others to attempt to diagnose it.

The 3100 and 3400 can commonly may from upper valve/lifter chatter as noted when cold. But if the engine warms up and you still here it, then it's not that. Without being infront of the car it's hard to say. I've had a loose spark plug that made a "ticking" but never noticed a performance problem. But again, that's top end stuff.

Make sure nothing underneath has become loose (such as issues with the exhaust piping). It may be something rattling and resonating against the metal. But if it truly is a noise internal on the bottom end, that is typically NOT good (but I have not heard of the 3100/3400 having any "common" bottom end issues).

im really hoping for just the timing chain, the engine seems to perform quite well ( still as powerful as when i bought it) i might just go pick up a automotive stethoscope at the local part store and go from there, i'll also try to take a video (all i have is my iphone though, we're all packed up, moving into our new house this week-end)
