Default How Much HP can a FWD Car Handle?

After looking at the APS Twin Turbo Kits, It got me thinking... If APS made a Twin Turbo Kit for the 2006+LS4 Group... How much Horsepower could the FWD System Handle before you were forced to turn the motor and re-route the drivetrain to the rear wheels.

When I worked for Nissan, the engineers there said FWD was originally designed for vehicles with less than 250-HP, and that theyhad to dramatically redesign the suspension system and drivetrain to handle the 265HP of the Maxima so that torque steer was minimized.

Ok... Then Chevrolet released the LS4 series with 303-HP, and I have yet to climb under the frontend of the car to see the dampering system (if present at all) that GM used to help with the Torque Steer -- although it is pretty wild with the SS. But, beyond torque steer... there is the transaxles, and the transmission itself to contend with.

So on a serious level, just how much horsepower and torque could the FWD System take before it just became too much?

I ask, because I figure an APS twin turbo system would probably produce close to 540+HP and over 530+ ft-lbs of torque. All for the chump change of about $12,000 or $9,995 for you gear heads that could install it by yourself.

So.. If a LS1 produces 545HP and a LS6 produces 607HP, I figure the LS4 (based on the LS6) has to be somewhere in-between the two... If you are wondering where I got my numbers... Out of my Butt...

Yeah.. I would have to agree.. Fwd presents its own unique challenges. But dare I say it, look to the sport compact world.. they have dragsters out there with over 1000hp daily.. Its possible, and more popular then ever with just about everything being FWD..

If you are referring to how much hp could the STOCK PARTS under your fwd handle.... I would say 400hp or so.Maybe 450hp. Everything under it would need replacing eventually and I would say a few parts almost immediately if you were making anywhere near 500hp. The tranny, drive axles etc,... those parts are gonna crap if it hooks outta the hole. Being as no one makes any of that stuff you would be forced to shell out extra money for one off performance parts. It could be done in fwd but I'd rather have it in rwd form like a SS should be. All you need is an unlimited supply of money, then you can make any car go as fast as you like. If it were only that easy...lol

I dont know if it is horse power or torque you should be worried about sure there are 1000hp fwd cars out there but what is their torque?

I'll side with Full Monte on this one. The axles on my car are what I would figure to go first. The trannies on these cars are fairly rugged.

IfI dropped a turbo, or even a scary supercharger, the part Id change would be,

Urathane Mounts
Axles (Complete from spline to cv to spindle)
Brakes
Upgrade to thd HD tranny..

But like I said.. thats for my car.

As for the torque figures, youd have to check the Gm perfomance divisions website at:

http://www.gmperformancedivision.com/

I cant see it. Im at work right now, but I would imaging these ecotecs are firing out 5-900 ft lbs of torque.
