Hi My son has a 2002 Monte Carlo and he has had it about 6 months, It started running rough and the check engine light came on. We went to Auto Zone had it plug in and the error was #2 cylinder miss fire. So we bought a new fuel injector and had a GM dealership in town here to install it. Well we got it back and it was running good, he was out in it this past week and it started running rough again and the check engine light came on again, so I took it back to Auto Zone to plug it in again, and now it is #3 cylinder miss fire. With 57,000 on it, it is hard to believe that these injectors are going bad. My question is,, are we going to have to replace all these injectors all at once to stop this problem? Thanks

 

Just because there is a misfire does not mean it is an injector that went bad. It could be spark plugs, spark plug wires, coils, compression, fuel pressure, etc. I recently had a misfire for cylinder 2. When I checked the wire, it was loose and would not stay clipped onto the plug. A new set of wires and it runs great.

 

and b4 just replacing injectors it often a good i dea to do a thorough cleaning of them first

 

Is it just me, seems like 57K is way too early for injector failures.

I don't believe a misfire has anything to do with the injectors. I replaced the plugs and wires in my '01 SS, and when I finally replaced the coil packs, my misfire finally went away. I believe it's all electrical. If it is fuel injector issues, make sure you use quality gas with NO ETHANOL! The extra water ethanol holds in my opinion messes EVERYTHING up. I have settled on Amoco and Shell gas, and ALL of these little issues, like this and gas gauge malfunctions, have not been a problem.
The quality of the spark plugs today, almost totally eliminates them as being a problem, unlessthe car isn't running right anyways, because of various issues. I replaced my plugs at 90K mi. and they still looked great. A waste of time and money as far as I'm concerned.
Bad wires will susually show themselves if you look at them closely when it's totally dark. They arc to something else next to them. You can see this clearly.
Of course, always check the terminals for tight connections.
If it is bad gas issues, try som "Seafoam" injector cleaner a couple of times.

 

I am not sure about other states, but Texas has forced all stations to switch over to at least a 10% Ethnol mix...

 

I personally would like to run E85, but the moisture holding ability of the ethanol bothers me. Too many problems down thru the years with CHEAP GAS and water in it. The answer in my opinion is to use only QUALITY gas, not the Speedway stuff (generic gas). I only run Amoco Ultimate or Shell V-power in my Intimidator.
The heat in texas should help these issues, I would guess. I'm in Michigan

I recently switched from Citgo to Valereo and I have noticed improvements in both performance & mileage..


I've also heard of many horror stories related to E85 linked to corrosion...

 

Misfires are not all electrical, though it is more common to have bad plugs/wires than a bad injector, especially at only 57k.
