Searched, and couldn't find a similar situation, but I know they're out there. So a referral link would be nice, too.

So I was on an off ramp a while back, and suddenly my monte carlo (2000 LS) started to sound like a civic (fart). I finally got it checked out, and the EGR tube had been broken in half!

Now I know the best course is to buy a new one, and they're relatively easy to get to, but I'm wondering about alternatives. Being repairing the broken one, or bypassing the EGR valve altogether.

Also if what side effects there would be by bypassing it. Thank in advance.

 

bypassing it is good and bad. good is it keeps the exhaust from recycling back into the engine. bad it looses a little fuel milage. also if you delete the egr valve you need to tune it out of the computer or it will cause issues.

there is no way of fixing that hose in my eyes. just go buy a new one

 

Thanks for the reply. All my local part stores list a replacement at $75. I have to ask since this is my first time dealing with this problem; is it possible at all to use jbweld?

 

I don't know that JB Weld would hold to the heat that passes through that tube. You are best replacing it.
My previous Grand Am (an '02 GT) has the same engine and I found the previous owners had placed a piece of rubber hose and a hose clamp over a hole in the same tube. I'm surprised the hose was not melted.
Regardless, I replaced it. I too did not want to pay $75 for one. I went to a Pull-A-Part and got one from an Alero. Wasn't easy (I had to do a little repair work to the fitting before I put the new one on). But it was a $5 part. Probably took 1+ hours to remove in the yard, 10+ minutes to fix it and then 30 minutes to install on my car.
So, depends how much time vs money you want into it. Or try eBay, sometimes used ones pop up there too.

 

I doubt jb weld will work it will flake off from the heat. As maniac said replace with new or possible junk yard one.

 

Well I did luck out, to an extent. I found the exact one I needed on Ebay. Brand new, and unopened with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty for $38. I think I'm gonna have to settle for this. I just think it's dumb to charge so much for a metal pipe.
