Default Cigarette Lighter

Hi I was really hoping that someone could possibly help me out. A few months ago I plugged this, what I thought to be a charger for my laptop, into the cigarette lighter of my 2004 monte carlo and after about 30 to 45 minutes of it being plugged up, we started smelling smoke so I unplugged it. Well it ended up being some type of charger for a DVD player and it ended up messing up my cigarette lighter. We checked the fuses and none seemed to need replacing, I don't know what's wrong with it, but I really hope someone out there can help me fix it, cause I would love to plug my ipod up so I can listen to my songs in the car.

well first off welcome and sry to here ur havin problems...is there any melted material in the cigarette lighter that could block the contacts? if not then have u pulled the cigarette lighter out and inspected the wiring goin to it...often times the smoke is caused by melting wires. it slowly burns the casing around the wire and produces smoke. i would check the wiring

I agree. I think you might have to replace the actual cigarette lighter outlet or at least inspect it to rule that out.

Hey thanks for all the suggestions!!! Does anyone have any idea on how to change the cigarette outlet and/or is it expensive and time consuming to change it?

I would go to a junk yard and practice. I have no idea how to remove it, but you could always get a Haynes repair manual which I'm sure would go over it.

in order to remove the cigarette lighter u have to remove part of the center counsel...its not to hard. there is one screw that is holding it on. that screw is in the compartment that is located beneath the radio. there is a rubber mat on the bottom or the compartment that u need to remove and underneath will b a small screw (maybe 7mm i cant remember) once u do that put the car into second and shut it off. then grab the back portion of the the center counsel (follow the lip because the back does not include the glove box) and grab with both hands and pull up. there are 2 clips that hold the center counsel in. next release the remainin clips and disconnect the wiring harness connectors and u should b able to pull the piece back, spin it 90 degrees and pull it out. this will completely remove the cigarette lighter with the counsel and u can insect the wiring and the cigarette lighter
