Question Changing Ignition Switch?

If I were to buy an aftermarket ignition switch would that fix the problem with the original switch?

IMO the recall isn't a fix, it is just a band aid, and I will not go to GM for this recall. I'd like to see what you folks think of a new switch being a better fix for this problem. It looks like an easy job to swap the switch out for a new one.

IMO if your ignition is working and you haven't had the problem the recall refers to, leave it be. I just went thru a rewire job under the dash and it's not fun.
But if you feel you must. Spend the $$$ to at least get the switch from gm. That may also not be a fix but it's better to have OEM. In this case!

What problem are you having with your ignition switch?

If you are referring to the recall, that is a bit more complex.
First to my knowledge the recall on the 00-05 monte does nothing with the ignition switch (at least according to the notice I got for my monte and wife's impala). Per the notices I received, gm is not touching the ignition switch, they want to add a filler to my key and 2 hoops between the key and the fob (I feel it is a joke).
I personally think the recall on the 00-05 monte/impala is gm afraid of addition public shame over this then a real problem. The 00-05 monte features a different ignition switch then what I believe the original recall was for.

My concern with an after market part is that unless you have confirmation that the aftermarket resolved the ignition switch "problem" then it was probably engineered like the oem (or worse quality in some cases). You open a bigger gamble.

My advice, if you are not having problems, leave it alone. If you get the recall and have concerns, go fulfill the recall. If you get notice of the recall, ignore it or do something outside of what gm tells you to do, then in the event of a failure gm's liability is lesser because you ignored their safety recall.

Changing out the switch isn't a big deal, removing the dash bezel and the plate under the column is the hardest part. Still the job takes 30 min or less.
But as said, if it isn't acting up, I'd leave it be. But if it does, at least it's no huge thing to fix

Thumbs up

I think The Manic is right. I'm not going to bother with this recall. I don't put many keys on my ring to begin with, and if there is a real problem with the switch GM would replace the switch.

Thanks for the input.
