Default New Aftermarket Head Unit -- Clearance?

I successfully installed a new Pioneer CD/MP3 in-dash unit in my '02 Monte Carlo. This kit came with a new box to replace my door chime, because of the design of the car. I ran into a couple of snags, which I will outline in greater detail in another post.

Unfortunately, after sliding the new radio into the sleeve, I have about a centimeter to go and it's blocked by a piece of useless plastic in back. I can feel that there is nothing behind the plastic, so I eventually plan to cut a hole in it so the radio can look flush. Right now it's installed but it sticks out a little bit. Any ideas/suggestions, or has anyone else run into this problem?

Also, the factory radio had the antenna, a grey plastic plug, and a smaller black plastic plug that goes into it from the car. The new radio only takes in the grey plastic plug and the antenna. Any ideas what the black one is? If needed I can get pictures, but it involves removing the dashboard :-(.

Thanks for any help!
