Default Aftermarket Head Unit & Quiet Sound

2001 Monte LS with factory amp in rear shelf

Sony BT4100P Head Unit
Metra Axxess GMOS 04 Wiring Kit

I have very little sound - its very quiet and stereo maxes out at 50 and to be able to hear anything while driving I have the stereo at 45, any higher and its just garbled mess. At 45 I feel like its a whisper.

All Fixed:

The Metra GMOS-04 is the right adapter for Monte Carlo's with the factory amplifier under the rear package tray in the trunk. These sell for anywhere from $60 - $100, If you buy a Receiver from Crutchfield they sell it for $50.

The Metra has TWO red power wires, Hook them both up!

The Metra has a blue/white remote amp turn on lead - Hook it up!

The Metra adapter has a small screw that increases the volume of the door chime - it is like a gain ****, turn it up or down - your choice on wheat level of sound and door chimes you want.

The Metra has a bunch of extra wires as its a universal adapter - tape up the open wires.

I have an 07 with that amp under the rear deck. For mine there was a harness made by PAC and you just had to either plug into the non-amplified or amplified port. Is yours something similar to this?

I'm using the Metra Axxess GMOS 01 which installed the Sony stereo to all the factory connectors.

I bought my stereo through Crutchfield (free shipping, no sales tax, free antenna adapter, free mounting kit, instructions/how-to guide, $25 gift card) and paid $50 for the GMOS 01.

I would like to fix the lack of sound - pretty sure I need to bypass the factory amplifier in the trunk - it makes sense as the Sony receiver is most likely more powerful & better sounding than the 12yr old factory amp.

Will the Metra 70-2054 fit? -

This post says to use the Metra 70-2021 - https://montecarloforum.com/forum/in...ing-amp-33478/

Anyone with experience using is - what kind of wiring do I still need to do after installing it?

Amazon has great review for Monte Carlos using the Metra 70-2021 - http://www.amazon.com/Metra-Amplifie...DateDescending

My PAC was like, $70 from amazon, or about $150 at a car audio shop. For a while I was running the factory head unit through the factory amp through a JL audio cleansweep to my aftermarket amps... best sound I've ever heard out of a factory headunit and unless you knew what was in there, you had no idea til you cranked it

I had a similar problem..

in the settings for my stereo I had an EQ built in... so I just boosted the vocal freqs... You'll find this on higher end stereos like a kenwood exelon or some of the nicer alpines

I have since replaced my aftermarket deck with the factory unit and installed the JL Audio Clean Sweep line processor on the output from the amp under the rear deck. When I tell you this thing sounds way better (minus a little hiss on certain inputs/at low volume) than just about any deck I've ever owned, I'm not lying. JL Audio is a little pricey (not so bad on the internet) but you get exactly what you pay for.
