Fortunately now I have both. I love driving around town in my 5 speed grand am but if I were to go on a long drive, I would take the monte. Its fun to shift but after a while you just want to relax while driving.

I drive both the mule is a stick an I drive the snot out of it.I love driving stick.
I can drive a stick with the best of them when my knee isn't acting up.Used to race with a 5speed.Felt odd racing the Mary Jane with the auto after all the years running a stick.

Had an Auto-Stick in my 97 Intrepid Sport ... God WHY did I do something SOOO stupid with that car?!?!?! I would still have that car to this day, & be on an entirely different forum altogether! Not that I am not aGM man, & not that I am a Chrysler man, but that car was mint ... a corporate lease return in 98 with 28,000 miles, & kept immaculate by an executive in Michigan. Ugh, ... I was sooo stupid. Imma schmuck. I beat myself up everyday I do not see that car in the driveway ... had it just over 2 years ... almost paid off.
Ah, but that Auto-Stick was nice!
And now the ElCamino with a 4-speed auto (TH-700R4) w/ it verrry worked-over ... I do not want me no stick, though I can drive the H3LL outta one, ... if need be.

Once upon a time, manual transmissions were faster. But auto transmissions kept getting better, manuals stayed about tha same. And now when manufactures are posting their numbers, the auto are faster. I enjoy driving stick. Like 'Space said, it's more involved. My Volvo has one of those manually shiftable autos (I don't know what they call it - ever manufacturer has a different name), but I find it useless because it lags way to much on the shift. I'd love to try one of these cars with an 8 speed auto
