Was there a limited edition in 1998?
That is an excellent point that I had not considered.
If this were a “sanctioned” edition, the race would have been named specifically. This is much more likely a dealer sales tactic.
so it carries no real collectibility. The car itself has some nice options though.
thanks for the insight!

That would be a logical RACE Day thing. In the event they made 20 of them there could be someone else out there. With similar cars.
You didn't indicate where the car is located?
This may help with the Race Day event.
Well maybe you might contact these 2 tracks and see if they know anything about a special edition.
However if you no longer want the car I would take it. That way you wouldn't have to discard it or send it to the salvage yard.
Ah, well the car is in Charleston, SC.
He’s not sure what he’s gonna do now. He was convinced he didn’t want it if it was “special” but he may choose to drive it now that it’s just a “regular” car. It runs out good now that he repaired the intake issue. He’s had several luminas that reached over 300k miles, so this ones just broken in.
I don’t know about other places, but around here a car that runs, drives, has a/c, and no major damage sells for over 2000$.
This guy has been fixing and selling cars most of his life. Some do end up at the scrap yard; some stuff just isn’t worth fixing.
if he decides not to keep it, I’ll see if he wants me to post an ad on here.
I appreciate all the input. It was good to go through this thought process with people who know about this type of car.

If you google the date on the door, comes back to the 82nd Indy 500. Even though I agree with everyone this is most likely a deal scam (such as order 20 Montes, possibly do the body kit, throw some badges/plaques/decals on it and pass it off as something "limited"), even I am somewhat intrigued to know the roots of this. Such as was the car sold from a dealer in or around Indianapolis?
Might want to see if you can use the VIN, see what Carfax will report (I am sure it's basic stuff, but might let you know where it was originally purchased). Might be able to call GM or talk to a local dealer and see if their database will go back to 1998. Even if the original dealer is out of business, I think finding that info could prove helpful/informative.

Looks decent, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was a dealer option/configuration. It's possible that it's a special edition, but it still wouldn't make the car worth big bucks now or in the near future.
