Introduced in 1970 as a "personal" coupe, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo was smooth, powerful and comfortable. Its most desirable version was the top-of-the line SS with a big 454 CID V8 engine that made it a screamer.
The 2000 Monte Carlo SS we test this week is much tamer, however, but it does follow in its forefather's tire prints.
OUTSIDE - Although the Monte Carlo shares its platform with the new Chevrolet Impala, no exterior panels are the same. Its silhouette is sleek and smooth, with sweeping character lines that run the length of its sides and break just around the door handles. The grille is a small slit across the front end, and the uniquely-shaped headlights wrap around into the fenders. Improvements to the chassis include strut-tower braces under the hood, one-piece body stampings and a stiffening superstructure behind the dashboard. Monte Carlo SS models look more assertive on the street than the LS versions, mainly due to their standard five-spoke alloy wheels and larger Goodyear Eagle tires.
INSIDE - There is plenty of room for four inside and five are only slightly squeezed. The front bucket seats are wide and soft, but could use more lumbar support. Lateral support could also be better. The center armrest for the back seat has a pair of handy built-in cupholders and the climb into the rear area is simple because the large doors open wide. The instrument panel is like a cockpit, glowing at night with lots of lighting and lots of buttons that operate the radio and climate controls. The multi-function controls on the steering wheel are easy to use. The ride is quiet inside, thanks to strategic placement of acoustic insulation, and the windows are sealed so well that very little wind noise enters the interior. Standard features include an AM/FM/cassette stereo, climate control, power windows, door locks and outside mirrors, tilt steering, rear window defogger, power trunk opener, fog lamps and remote keyless entry.
[b]ON THE ROAD - The Monte Carlo LS is powered by a 180-horse, 3.4 liter V6, while the SS model uses a 3.8 liter V6 with 200 horsepower. Its 225 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm are enough to propel the SS to 60 MPH in just eight seconds which makes entering a crow

2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Review

Dale Earnhardt approves.

One of the flaps during the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup racing season was that Chevrolet produced this all-new Monte Carlo SS well in time for the season, but wasn't allowed to race it. After close inspection, race officials told Chevrolet that the car could not be raced until the beginning of the 2000 Winston Cup season in February at Daytona. The reason? It may have been because this car is so good in the wind tunnel that NASCAR had to re-think its rules package.
The Monte Carlo you're looking at is a production car in race-designed body shell. All new from the ground up, it's shape is designed for winning Winston Cup races at America's superspeedways.
It's also the replacement for the best-selling midsize coupe in the United States. So it has two important jobs to do for Chevrolet. WalkaroundAs slick as it is aerodynamically, from an esthetical standpoint the new Monte Carlo almost looks like it was designed by a committee, with each member handling only a small part of the car. It was most assuredly not designed this way, it's just how the final product came out when the engineers and designers emerged from the last wind-tunnel session. The 2000 Monte Carlo doesn't look anything like the 1999 model. Nor does it look like any Monte Carlo before it nor any other car in the Chevrolet lineup. That's good for drivers who want something that looks like the one the Winston Cup boys will race next year. And it's good for those among the avant-garde who will like it because it is so different. The droopy nose, the flat flanks, the bump in the deck lid and the radical roofline may not appeal to everyone, however.
What you can't see is just as important to the integrity of the Monte Carlo and, in that respect, we have to give Chevrolet high marks. The engineers have strengthened the roof, doors and floor pan. They designed an aluminum front cradle from which to suspend the engine, transmission, steering, suspension and front sheet metal. The interior features a cast magnesium beam, called a MagBeam, that fits behind the instrument panel; this further increases chassis rigidity and provides mountings for the dashboard systems. As a result, the new Monte Carlo is much quieter than any previous generation. Increased chassis stiffness also makes the car less prone to squeaks and rattles developing over time. Interior FeaturesOne of the best things about Chevrolet design in recent years is the uniformity of instrument panel design and appearance that has been wrought throughout the product line - from the Corvette to the Silverado pickup. With black background, white markings and red needles, the instrument layout is not only racy in flavor, but also easy to read and scan, with the major and minor gauges placed on slightly different planes to add visual interest. Another really nice touch inside the new Monte Carlo is its cockpit-style instrument panel that houses those new gauges and controls. It separates the driver completely from the front passenger and provides fingertip access to every system in the array in a nicely styled package that works.
[b]The Monte Carlo comes with bucket seats, of course, and we found them quite comfortable for around town driving. Their shape makes it easy to get in and out of the car. Front-seat passengers appreciate the new shotgun-side power seat option. The seats are easy to adjust and there's plenty of adjustment for short and tall drivers. The

2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Review
The car for NASCAR fans.

Chevrolet says its 2002 Monte Carlo is "classy with a wild streak." The wild streak comes from the car being shaped in the wind tunnel for minimal drag and maximum stability because it of Chevrolet's participation in NASCAR Winston Cup stock car racing. It is no exaggeration to say Chevrolet and Monte Carlo have dominated NASCAR racing since the "modern era" of the sport began in 1972. Since its reintroduction to NASCAR's high-banked ovals in 1995, the Monte Carlo has won five consecutive Winston Cup Series Driver's Championships.

Of course, the Monte Carlo at your local dealership doesn't have the tube-frame or rear-wheel drive of a Winston Cup race car. But it does provide spirited performance in its SS form. And its styling does attract attention. Just don't expect people to cover their ears when you start it up.
WalkaroundMonte Carlo is a slick car aerodynamically. However, it looks as if it were designed by a committee. Individual elements are attractive, but we're not quite satisfied with how they hang together as a whole. It looks like how it must have looked when the engineers and designers emerged from the last wind-tunnel session.
In addition its aerodynamic objectives, the Monte Carlo tries to integrate elements from past models. The result is a shape that's like nothing else on the road. Some love it. Others are not attracted to the droopy nose, the flat flanks, the bump in the deck lid and the radical roofline.
However, what you can't see is just as important to the integrity of the Monte Carlo. In that respect, we have to give Chevrolet high marks. Compared to pre-2000 Monte Carlos, this one has been strengthened in the roof, doors, and floor pan. An aluminum front cradle isolates the engine, transmission, steering, and suspension from the main structure of the car. The interior features a cast magnesium beam, called a MagBeam, that fits behind the instrument panel to further increase chassis rigidity and provide a stiff mounting for the dashboard systems. As a result, the latest Monte Carlo is much quieter than any previous generation. Increased chassis stiffness also makes the car less prone to squeaks and rattles over time.
Interior FeaturesOverall, the interior is a nice design with a sporty flavor that reminds us of Corvettes and Camaros. The bucket seats are quite comfortable for around-town driving. Their shape makes it easy to get in and out of the car. Both seats are easy to adjust, and there's plenty of range for short and tall drivers. Front-seat passengers will appreciate the power seat option.
The instruments are nicely designed with straightforward gauges that are well laid out and easy to read. One of the best things about Chevrolet design is the uniformly functional instrument layout that has been wrought throughout the product line, from the Corvette to the Silverado pickup. With black backgrounds, white markings and red needles, the look is not only racy in flavor, but also easy to read and scan, with the major and minor gauges placed on slightly different planes to add visual interest.
The ignition switch is conveniently located on the dash, well to the right of the steering wheel. This makes it easy to quickly get in the car and get going, or quickly get out of the car after shutting it off.
[b]Another nice touch inside the new Monte Carlo is its cockpit-style dashboard that houses those new gauges and controls. It separates the driver completely from the front passenger and provides fingertip

New Car Review
1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS
by Carey Russ

"Monte Carlo" is a grand old name in Chevrolet history. It first graced a front-engined, rear-wheel drive personal coupe from 1970 through the late 1980s. The 1970 Monte Carlo was a car for its day, with a six foot-long hood and available in SS muscle car form with a 454 cubic inch, 365 horsepower V8 engine.
The "Monte" remained popular through several redesigns in the 1970s and 1980s. It served as a basis for cars raced on the NASCAR stock car circuit during that period. But time and technology caught up with the rear-wheel drive design, and it gave way to the Lumina Coupe in 1988. When the second-generation Lumina made its debut in 1995, the Monte Carlo nameplate was applied to the coupe form.
As the original Monte Carlo was a car for its day, the 1998 Monte Carlo is a car for its day. Reflecting changes in technology and consumer tastes, the current car emphasizes value, balanced performance, and space efficiency rather than the macho attitude and straight-line performance of the muscle car era. Two models are offered - the LS and Z34. Both combine sporty styling and handling with midsized room. As it has done since its introduction, the LS uses a 3.1-liter V6 engine. New to the sportier Z34 this year is the 3800 Series II V6 also used in the Camaro. The Monte Carlo nameplate continues to grace the Chevrolets raced in NASCAR.
The 1998 Monte Carlo LS currently sitting in my driveway may not have the dragstrip acceleration of a big-block 1970 SS, but I'd wager that it gets around corners and stops better. And is certainly quieter and more comfortable in the bargain. It's a personal coupe that combines NASCAR-inspiring style, a high degree of comfort, economical operation, and the sort of good handling that makes a car enjoyable.
APPEARANCE: The Monte Carlo's sleek, aerodynamic styling looks like it was inspired by the racing version. Actually, things are the other way around. The street car was shaped to allow its near-lookalike racing namesake to work at high speeds on the NASCAR stock car racing circuit. The street version wears its performance heritage subtly. From the side, the car has a rounded wedge shape. The hood is long for a modern front-drive car, but far short of the old six feet. At the front, a small air intake is flanked by oval headlights. The LS model has chrome trim around the intake and a chromed Chevy bowtie; the Z34 is chromeless, with a red bowtie. A semi-fastback passenger cabin with a short rear quarter window and thick C-pillar echo some Monte Carlo styling cues from the past.
COMFORT: Inside, the Monte Carlo LS shows its practical, comfort- oriented side. Space utilization is very good for a coupe. Materials are the synthetics expected for the price, but there are far more comfort and convenience features than one might expect. With options, my test car was around the new-car average price. But it had a more than average equipment level. Although a split-bench front seat is standard, this one had the optional cloth-covered buckets. These come with a full console that includes a cupholder and deep, covered storage box. The rear contoured bench seat has real room for two medium-sized people, or three for less time. It folds with a 60/40 split for increased trunk capacity. The trunk itself is far larger than usual for a coupe. The AM/FM/CD stereo automatically adjusts the volume level to compensate for external noise levels at varying speeds. A fast-acting climate control system with dual temperature control keeps the inside at the right temperature. Good instrument panel and control design helps give the driver of the Monte Carlo LS a good environment in which to work.
SAFETY: Standard safety equipment in the Chevrolet Monte Carlo includes safety cage chassis construction with fr
