Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
By Robert Farago
November 28, 2003

There's something slightly odd about testing a car called an "SS". While petrolheads may know that Chevrolet uses the letters to indicate a "Super Sports" derivative, it's hard not to wonder how many SS models are bought by German-speaking Argentineans. Anyway, just in case I wanted to maintain a low profile whilst driving a Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS past my local synagogue, GM kindly delivered a press car painted in "Competition Yellow".
No matter. Even in kindergarten-friendly hues, the SS' shape lacks charisma. It's best viewed from the side, where cleverly-placed swage lines accentuate balanced proportions. From the front, nothing. The rear transports us to the 70's, when safety legislation triggered a plague of bulbous bumper grafts. Overall, Monte's anodyne design projects less visual aggression than a tuned Honda - never mind its hairy-chested ancestors.
The SS' interior offers a more direct link to the past; a time when rotary ***** and plastic sliders controlled all ergonomic functions. Actually, ***** and sliders are an excellent way to tweak graduated systems at speed. It's just that Monte's switchgear is fashioned from black, pre-disco plastic; a substance so nasty even vinyl would be a welcome upgrade. The test car's cabin had all the gizmology of a modern car - XM radio, On Star, power this and that - with none of the soft touch sensuality, backlit fun or technological flair of its Japanese rivals.
What the SS does have is "lebensraum" (living space). Unlike the competition, Monte is a full-sized coupe for full-sized drivers and two of their full-sized American friends. The seats may provide the same lateral support as a museum bench, but they're comfortable enough for all but the extremely obese or chronically tall. Maybe that's why the steering wheel wouldn't seem out of place in a bus. On the positive side, the elbow friendly dimensions yield an important safety benefit: a five-star front impact rating.
Ah, but who cares about such sensible concerns as life or death when you've got a bad *** V8 rumbling in the engine bay? If only. The Monte Carlo SS is powered by a 3.8 litre supercharged V6. The Series II (L65) power plant is mechanical sacrilege. Lest we forget, the original SS, the 1961 Chevrolet Impala SS, sported a 409 cubic inch V8. It was so powerful (360hp) that its capacity was immortalized by The Beach Boys in their hit song "409".
GM's decision to give the Monte Carlo SS a 231 cubic inch V6 is even more baffling when you consider the V8-powered monsters wearing the Monte Carlo badge currently competing for NASCAR glory. I mean, the late, great Dale Earnhardt drove a Monte Carlo! Surely, there was a suitably compact engine somewhere in the secret store room of GM's Performance Division… Mind you, Monte's super six is a feisty little thing. Roust the car's lag-free supercharger and the engine generates more than merely adequate peak power: 240hp at 5200rpm. Better still, there's plenty of torque underfoot: 280 lb-ft at 2600rpms. No matter where you happen to be in the power band when you plant your foot in the carpet, the car's cast iron lump responds to the slightest throttle input with immediate urge.

Engines for 07, going from a 3.5-liter LZE V6 rated at 211 horsepower up to the SS engine, a 5.3-liter LS4 V8 rated at 303 horsepower. The SS certainly recalls the Monte Carlo's muscle car roots. Surprisingly, this small-block engine gets fairly good mileage at 18/27 city/highway

INFOR ON THE 2006 MONTE CARLO: [b]The only year the 3.9L V-6 was installed in the Monte

2006 MONTE CARLO: A NEW LOOK FOR AN ON-TRACK WINNER
The aggressively styled 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo heats up the sizzling mid-car segment with enhanced premium-quality features, racing-inspired styling, a new family of powerful engines, as well as thoughtful attention to detail. A new look for the front and rear fascias – including bold headlamps and taillamps – is complemented by revised suspension systems that deliver comfortable, quiet and more confident ride and handling characteristics. These new ingredients improve on an already popular recipe for driving satisfaction.

Monte Carlo draws on a rich NASCAR stock car racing legacy – the most successful nameplate in the sport’s history – to offer one of the industry’s only true midsize personal coupes. The vehicle has remained true to the roots of style and performance established at its introduction in 1970.

“For ’06, Monte Carlo delivers more of the performance and style demanded by customers, but with an increased emphasis on comfort, roominess and driving manners,” said Brent Dewar, General Motors North America vice president of marketing and advertising . “We fine-tuned the details to deliver a value-driven vehicle that delivers unexpected refinement.”

A new family of premium-feature V-6 engines is available in LS, LT and LTZ models, including a 211-horsepower (157 kw) 3500 3.5L V-6 and an available 3900 3.9L V-6 that uses variable valve timing and variable intake technology to help deliver 242 horsepower (180 kw) and 242 lb.-ft. (328 Nm) of torque.* The muscular Monte Carlo SS has a new 5.3L small-block V-8 that’s good for 303 horsepower (226 kw) and 323 lb.-ft. (438 Nm) of torque. The 5.3L V-8 uses Displacement on Demand technology to regulate between eight-cylinder and four-cylinder operation, providing up to 8 percent improved fuel economy in certain driving conditions.

All engines are matched to the Hydra-Matic 4T65-E four-speed automatic transmission. This smooth shifting transmission is renowned for its durability and strength with high-torque engines. The version mated with the 5.3L V-8 is enhanced to match the engine’s increased torque output.

Highlights for the 2006 Monte Carlo include:

All-new family of 3.5L and 3.9L V-6 engines in LS, LT and LTZ models
Standard 5.3L small-block V-8 with Displacement on Demand technology in SS model
Hydra-Matic 4T65-E four-speed automatic transmission mated to all engines; enhanced version used with 5.3L V-8
Modified exterior styling with bold headlamps and taillamps
Retuned suspensions with wider front track
New family of 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires
Enhanced ABS and traction control
Revised interior with high-quality attention to detail, including improved seat upholstery stitching, low-gloss IP components and jewel-like IP details
High-quality Nuance Sandstone leather seating (available)
New family of audio systems
Standard dual-stage frontal air bags
Available side seat-mounted air bags for front passengers ( Monte Carlo )
Factory-installed remote vehicle starter available
Standard OnStar
Design details

Monte Carlo has a revised look, both inside and out. The exterior features large headlamps that have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units. These details complement other high-quality attributes to provide an overall feeling of solidity. Also, new, flat-blade windshield wipers are used to provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. All models receive a sporty rear spoiler.

The Monte Carlo SS has a distinct front-end appearance, with a dual-split grille that has a black-diamond crosshatch

2006 Monte Carlo SS0 to 60 mph 5.6 secTop Speed 145 +The throaty roar of the V-8 returns — but is it enough?[:-]Sound Clips/Video SS [:-]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj5DUnbNt30Crank Up your Speakers It's a great `Tune : )
How far can you push (ok, pull) front-wheel drive? How about 303 horses, 5.6 seconds to 60 mph and a top end pushing 145 mph? These are the raw numbers for Chevy's updated and seriously pumped-up 2006 Monte Carlo SS coupe. Yes, it has a V-8, the first time one's been available in a Monte Carlo since the mid-1980s. And yeah, it drives the front wheels this time.

Is that a problem?

For the ideological purist, it's tough to get cozy with the idea of a serious performance car thatisn't rear-wheel drive, like theReagan-era '83-'88 Monte Carlo SS was. But take a turn behind the wheel; give it a chance. This '06 model makes a persuasive case for itself no matter which set of wheels happen to be laying down the rubber. Streetbound Monte Carlos have long emulated the stock-car look. This one delivers the stock-car experience.

For starters, the new SS has an all-alloy5.3 liter V-8 burbling out a stout 303 horsepower - quite an uptick from the old SS's puny (by current standards) 180-hp "high output" 5.0-liter V-8. For another, it's almost three full seconds quicker to 60 (mid-low fives vs. the mid-low eights for the '80s-era SS). And finally, there's next to no torque steer when you hammer it, thanks to equal stiffness half-shafts and an extruded aluminum engine cradle and triple engine mounts designed to limit engine flex under torque load, among other refinements.

A proper front-drive burnout is both doable and enjoyable without awkward skittering left to right.

We worked the SS hard atthe world famous CharlotteMotor Speedway , a 1.5-mile NASCARtrack where the Monte more than proved its mettle. Full-throttle from a stop ithewed straight and true, lighting up the 18-inch Goodyears as stoutly as a '70 SS 454 Monte Carlo . And it actually felt on its game banking the oval at 120-plus - impressive for a production car, front-drive, rear-drive, whatever. About the only time you get any negative feedback from the front-drive layout is when you punch it from a stop and make a hard left or right-hander; then the traction control system cuts in to keep you on an even keel and prevent any torque-induced damage to the half-shafts.

CONTACTS
2006 Chevy Impala and Monte Carlo Deliver Refinement and Performance with Quiet Strength

LOS ANGELES – Quiet strength exemplifies the new 2006 Chevy Impala and Monte Carlo – an inherited attribute that is blended into premium mid-car vehicles that offer stylish design, stirring performance and surprising details, including available V-8 power.
Chevrolet unveiled the 2006 Impala and Monte Carlo at the 2005 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. The vehicles enter the hotly contested mid-car segment with enhanced premium-quality features and attention to detail, including an innovative flip-and-fold rear seat in the Impala, and revised suspension systems that deliver comfortable, quiet and more confident ride and handling characteristics. These new ingredients improve on an already popular recipe for driving satisfaction.
“The ’06 Impala and Monte Carlo deliver more of what customers want from a large sedan or coupe – uncompromising roominess, but with the performance and styling of a sports car,” said Brent Dewar, Chevrolet general manager. “Mid-car represents the largest segment of the industry, and the ’06 Impala and Monte Carlo will continue Chevy’s leadership there.”
Both vehicles hold unique positions in the market. Impala is an unqualified success, with more than 1 million sales since its 1999 debut and market share increases from 2 percent in ’99 to 8 percent through 2003. The Monte Carlo draws on a rich NASCAR racing legacy to offer one of the industry’s only true mid-size personal coupes. Each vehicle carries strong heritage, too, with the Monte Carlo nameplate introduced in 1970 and the Impala introduced in 1958.
Standard and available safety features include ABS, traction control, side-curtain roof rail air bags on Impala, and available seat-mounted side air bags for Monte Carlo . A new family of high-tech V-6 engines, which features cam phasing to optimize performance and economy, is standard in both vehicles, with the base models receiving a new 3.5L V-6 that produces 210 (156 kw) horsepower and 220 lb.-ft. (304 Nm) of torque. Uplevel models are available with a 240-horsepower (179 kw) 3.9L V-6 built on the same architecture as the 3.5L engine.
Impala SS and Monte Carlo SS receive the new LS4 5.3L V-8 with Displacement On Demand (DOD) technology to regulate between eight-cylinder and four-cylinder operation – providing up to 12 percent improved fuel economy in certain light-load driving conditions. The 5.3L V-8 produces 303 horsepower (226 kw) and 323 lb.-ft. (438 Nm) of torque.
The 2006 models hold up the vehicles’ legacies of performance, style and personal touches, including:
