A Long Way From NASCAR

ByChristian Wardlaw
Date posted: 01-01-1999

Back when stock car racing was just that, automakers had a motto: Race on Sunday, sell on Monday. After all, the cars on the track then were very similar to the ones in the showroom. Most of the basic componentry and sheetmetal were shared between race cars and street cars. Conventional wisdom said that if a car won on race day, folks would want to buy one like it the following week. These days, stock car racing is big money. Mega-buck teams compete for media exposure as much as they do for the checkered flag. The cars are rolling billboards that all look alike; block letters on the front air dam spell "Monte Carlo" and "Thunderbird" and "Grand Prix" so that the announcers won't get confused. The only thing linking today's stock car with the one you can purchase at a local dealership is the profile of the body, which must match a template of the production car's proportions. Take a look at the Monte Carlo Z34, the production version of Dale Earnhardt's Goodwrench Chevy. Dale runs V-8 power through the rear axle. We get a twin cam V-6 driving the front wheels. Dale gets no nonsense analog gauges. We get a basic cluster supplemented by idiot lights. Dale gets a manual transmission. We get an automatic. On the plus side, our version of the Monte Carlo is much more livable than Dale's single-seat, roll-caged coupe.Performance with the street-legal Monte Carlo Z34 is sluggish around town, thanks to a dearth of low-end torque. The 3.4-liter OHC V-6 engine doesn't really kick in until the tachometer is showing three grand or better, at which point this Chevy is off like a shot. Handling and braking are acceptable but unremarkable. The Monte Carlo feels much larger than it is, thanks to a rather small greenhouse, poor visibility, and a hefty curb weight. The skinny leather-wrapped steering wheel doesn't make the Z34 feel particularly sporty, either. Traditionally, the Monte Carlo has been about making a personal statement through dramatic design and luxurious appointments. This iteration delivers luxury, but little in the way of unique style. Essentially, the Monte Carlo is a Lumina coupe, and Chevy stylists didn't go very far to disguise this lineage, inside or out. The result is an attractive, yet anonymous coupe. Swept flanks and exclusive body stampings have been swapped for the convenience and cost-effectiveness of parts bin engineering.Interior design is becoming increasingly important as we spend more and more time in our cars commuting, conducting business, eating, and banking. The Monte Carlo certainly is a comfortable car. Our tester came equipped with a power driver's seat, leather upholstery, dual zone temperature controls, and a CD player. However, Chevrolet needs to do some fine tuning inside. We found that when our right leg was propped against the center console, a rough plastic edge on the back of the console could easily shave skin. The plastic wood trim had flawed and frayed edges that looked downright tacky. Dashboard panels didn't seem to fit together well either. On the plus side, the center console is designed to hold CD's, and the split folding rear seat is handy. All controls were easy to use, particularly the excellent rotary switches for the climate control system.[b]We had some bad luck with our test car. The first day we had it, we drove over a razor blade which promptly evacuated all the air inside the left rear tire through a large gash sliced into the inner sidew

Special Note: Several General Motors horsepower and torque numbers have been certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (i.e. SAE certified). A new voluntary power and torque certification procedure developed by the SAE Engine Test Code committee was approved March 31, 2005. This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing. GM was the first auto manufacturer to begin using the procedure and expects to use it for all newly rated engines in the future.

Chevrolet Monte Carlo
The genealogy of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo is divided into six generations. The first generation Monte Carlo debuted as a personal luxury coupe in 1970 and was produced until 1972. In 1973, the second generation Monte Carlo was introduced, featuring a more luxurious car with better handling characteristics. Came 1978 and the Monte Carlo again received a redesign, marking the third generation for the car. Equipped with brand new Chevrolet Monte Carlo parts, including the vehicle's first 6-cylinder engine, the third generation Monte Carlo proved to be better and lighter—by 800 pounds—compared to its predecessor. In 1981, the Monte Carlo entered its fourth generation with a completely redesigned body. The model, however, was discontinued after the midyear of 1988, never to reappear again until midyear of 1994.In 1994, the Monte Carlo line was resurrected with the introduction of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo Coupe. Then in its fifth generation, the basic vehicle format of the Monte Carlo had been changed significantly. In this new body style, the Monte Carlo registered consecutive wins for the first five NASCAR Winston Cup races. In 2000, the Monte Carlo again received a redesign, marking the sixth generation of the vehicle. Offered in two trim lines, the LS and the SS, the sixth generation Monte Carlo lasted until 2005. Restyled in 2006.
Chevrolet Monte Carlo History
The first generation Chevrolet Monte Carlo (1970-1972) was introduced as Chevrolet's entry to the personal luxury car segment. Based on the A-Body Chevelle platform with a 6 footer hood, the Monte Carlo was designed to compete with TOTL luxury cars. The vehicle remained essentially unchanged until 1972 when the SS package was dropped and replaced by the Custom package.
In 1973, the second generation Monte Carlo (1972-1977) was introduced, featuring new Chevrolet parts and a new look. The vehicle retained its 116-inch wheelbase although its new design, highlighted by deeper curves, was clearly borrowed from the GM Colonnade coupe. For the 1975 model year, a swivel seat option was available. Prior to that, the 454 engine was introduced due to fuel embargos. All new' for 1978, the Chevy Monte Carlo ushered on its third generation (1978-1980) with all the familiar curves but with a new engine—the first V6 engine for the Monte Carlo . In 1979, a new taillight, which was wrapped around the back end of the vehicle, replaced the original design of the horizontal taillights. The turbocharged V6 was available for 1980 and it was also graced with rectangular quad, side-by-side headlights. The fourth generation Monte Carlo (1981-1988) was defined as the complete new generation of Monte Carlo . In 1983, the Super Sport package, Z65, returned and in 1984, the Monte Carlo SS package introduced bucket seats and an optional center console. The SS Aerocoupe body style was available for 1986 and 1987.[b]The last rear wheel drive Monte Carlo was built December 11, 1987 at 5:29PM at the Pontiac Michigan plant. This seemed to mark the e

2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Overview
[:-]Never mind the NASCAR association; or the bad-boy reputation. Never mind that the Chevrolet Monte Carlo is as quick as it looks, with a 303-horsepower, variable-displacement small-block V8 as its top engine choice. Never mind the neo-muscle-car image the Monte Carlo carries. The Monte is primarily about style. Always has been. Always will be.
The Monte Carlo was born in 1970 as a high-style variant on a more mundane mid-size sedan, and as a high-value alternative to more expensive personal luxury coupes. Its mission, at which it succeeded brilliantly, was to deliver a lot of visual importance for relatively small monthly payments. A big-bore SS version was there from the start, but initially the SS sold at a trickle compared to a torrent of base-model coupes with all the luxury options.
The Monte quickly developed a dual personality: Although conceived originally for visual effect, its unusual proportions seemed to give it an edge in handling balance at medium-length NASCAR oval tracks. By the late 1970s, the Monte Carlo was Chevrolet's standard-bearer in stock-car competition. Then with each successive generation, Chevrolet refined the Monte's shape to improve its high-speed performance. The Monte Carlo is now the winningest nameplate in the history of NASCAR, which is certainly something to crow about.
Something comes over us when we're in a Chevy Monte Carlo. It's hard not to fantasize we're rocketing down the front straight at Talladega with 42 stock cars glued to our rear bumper. Or maybe we're going through the inner loop at Watkins Glen, bounding off the curbs as we go through the big chicane. The Monte just has that look about it. It has that feel about it, too, making it an enjoyable and appropriate car for winding down a rural road in the South with the windows down. It still draws admiring looks in these parts.
Like we said, it's all about style.
Last year, 2006, Chevrolet face-lifted the Monte Carlo. The new look is smoother, more mature, more sophisticated. At the same time, a V8 engine became available, for the first time in a Monte Carlo since 1987. Changes for 2007 are relatively minor.
We always bond with the Monte Carlo whenever we drive one. It's roomy and comfortable and easy to operate. Despite its race-track breeding, the Monte Carlo offers more interior volume than any of its non-GM competition. It's fast and fun to drive. It's stable at high speeds for long runs down the interstate and it's great fun on back roads, the same kind of roads that form the roots of stock car racing. The SS promises the kind of performance that Monte Carlo buyers haven't seen in a long time, along with a chance to feel connected to a winning tradition.
We're expecting this to be the last year for the Monte Carlo, with production ending inJune 2007. So act now if you want to buy a new one.
Summary
[b]With 38 years of heritage behind it, the 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a fast, competent, and comfortable cruiser on interstate runs and good fun on back roads. We recommend the handsome leather interior. The SS model promises spirited acceleration, decent handling, and good brakes. This is a car shaped in a wind tunnel with the purpose of getting around a NASCAR super-speedway as quickly as possible. [u]It's n
