Info: Oil, oil, oil

Rereading through this, I also struggle with this statement. You're saying that because Florida is one of the warmer states in the US that everyone is burning a ton of oil?
I have not bought a brand new vehicle since 1995, a Dodge Dakota, and previous to that I never owned a vehicle that had more than 150,000 miles on it, Back in the 70's and 80's when I lived in NY everything rotted with rust before you could get 150,000 out of it. I moved to Florida in 88. I had a nice 85 Ford Ranger that leaked oil like a sieve, and traded it for an 89 Dakota, then traded that for a 95.
My 95 Dakota got smashed in 99, and ever since I've said screw it, I'm not buying any more new cars.
Since then everything I've owned ( besides my 02 Monte ) have been Jeeps with 4.0L engines that had around 150,000 miles on them, the first I got for $500, an AMC built Waggoneer, (the small one) and I ran straight 40 non synthetic in it for years, until I asked Tire Kingdom to do an oil change when I got new tires, I told them to put 40W in it
I dont know what they put in it, but 3000 miles later it froze up on the highway, no oil ! My fault for not checking, yes, but why would I have ? no issues of oil being low previously using 40W. It had about 275,000 at the time.
My second Jeep 4.0L a 97, had about 180,000 when I got it, I needed to replace my previous Jeep fast, and this was the cheapest one I could find at the time for $2000, I ran 20W50 Mobil One in that for a long time , untill I couldn't find it any more, and then ran 20W 50 Valvoline, but the longer it went the more oil it would consume, about 2 quarts between oil changes, this one is the one I would pour oil from the previous oil change in occasionally. I finally changed to Jeep number 3 when it had about 335,000 miles on it, only because it would quit running occasionally, and this was too dangerous for my job, having it quit running while going 75 mph on I-95. I was going to keep it and restore it but some neighbor ratted me out to Code Enforcement, by then I had figured out it was the battery cable that was causing the quit running problem. I was p***** that I had to sell it, and more P*****, that I couldn't put all the good Wrangler tires on my newer O2 Cherokee because it had 16 inch rims and the 15 inch wheels wouldn't fit.
So anyway now my 02 Cherokee 4.0 has gone from about 150k ( $3000 5 years ago ) to coming up on 250K, but is now needing 2 quarts between oil changes.
My 02 Monte, I have no idea, Didn't run when I got it, and I have some work to go, but it has 154K on it.
So I guess I was just fishing for other peoples experience about Oil and oil viscosity and weight to see what their experiences are! Because I'm about to run higher weight oil in my 02 Jeep, and was looking at an 00 Jeep for cheap that spun a bearing at just under 200k.
I had a customer with a Monte Carlo who got 465,000 miles out of it, then gave it to his son, running great, I think it was 4th Gen 305, but its been a while since I saw him.
