Like many have posted how fas you want to go depends on how much $$$ you're willing to spend??

The small block 427s I've priced are right at $12,000. But you could build a couple 350s or 383s for that price. And you can definately buy a running big block for $12k.

If I had the cash my dream engine range would be:
327 small block (whichI own).
400 small block (which I own).
427 small block (I have to buy).
572 big block (I have to buy).

That would take care of 4 of my cars. Then the '86 Monte, what would I put in it?

I wouldn't say a 305 is worthless because my father had bought me a 78 camaro RS that had an 85 monte 305 that the guy ran in his 68 C/10 at the strip and he ran 11.23 @126mph and he claimed he only put $3,000 into the motor and it was a badass sounding motor.I ended up buying a 95 mustang and ripped that disappointment that Ford called an engine and planted that 305 in it and i could carry a burnout from 1st to 3rd and i wasnt scared to line up against a 350,383 or 400 but yes i agree you could make a nasty motor with the 350 or whatever else im must be the only guy in the world who sees the potential in a 305 but its one of those things if you are willing to spend the money do whatever you want to with what you can. I have an 87 with a 305 and yes its not gonna win any races unless the other person is a VW or something haha. good luck with whatever path you take
