RE: How can i crank horsepower outta my 305???
the 305 doesn't come with 220hp?? i would have figured it would have been more than that
but intake manifold, headers, carb, cam, lifters
all that stuff helps out really good
then get a nice flowmaster exhaust system on there

if you can find a good set of heads off of a L69 305H.O get them rebuild and get a cam aluminum intake carb headers dual exhaust but you will have to refresh the bottom end as well to get 220 hp
we did a stock bottom endrebuild of a L69 we had 9.5:1 compression the cam was a bit bigger stock heads with a valve job and gasket match port job edelbrock intake q-jet carb and headers and we got ruffly 250 hp
the stock L69 comes with 210 bhp so its not a big stretchto do 220 but if you have the LG4 then you have 160 bhp but is still doable but more expensive

The Monte Carlo SS 305 HO's only put out 180-horsepower @ 4800 rpm / 225 torque foot pounds @ 3200 rpm. The standard 305 put out 150-horsepower @ 3800 rpm / 255 torque foot pounds @ 2800 rpm
Anyway, I think you will find this site somewhat useful. http://www.montecarloss.com/SSThunder/engine.html or http://www.montecarloss.com/SSThunder/ELengines.html

The 1980s 305s were never a street killer engine. Even the High Output 305s are considered worthless by most the SS guys. They say yank that 305 out and put a 350 under the hood then use the 305 as a boat anchor.
You can squeeze a little horsepower out of a 305 but don't expect 200 ponies.

Mickey,
For only $14,000,000,000 we can get you the HP you want out of that engine in your Monte. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]
Yeah, I've read that it costs a lot more to build up a 305 than it is to buy a turn-key crate 350, 383 stroker OR built-up 400.
I'd love to put the '73 400 small block I have under the hood of my '86 LS Monte. But since I'm trying to keep it stock, I can't.
(unless I do put the 400 in and just tell everyone it's a 305?) [sm=smiley2.gif]
It would be COOL... to put one of the 427 small blocks under the hood of a 4th gen Monte. [sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley16.gif]

RE: How can i crank horsepower outta my 305???
well the 305 h.o was underated at 180 because the same motor in the camaro was reated at 190 that was just to keep the camaro guy's from crying and g.m always underate the power of there motors and yes alot of guys say that the 305 is worth less to put a 350 but i say that a 350 is use less and i would never wasted my time with one of em but to each it's own
any ways all small block's are pretty much the same so power is to be made in them its just how much you want to pay
any small piston sized block like (265,283,305,307)will be more expensive
and then the (302,327,350,383) will be the least expensive of them all because every has them and the aftermarket is plentiful
and then the 400 a little bit more expensive then the 350 but worth every penny the power is awsome
