I think what gm was shooting for was to center the weight on the key. So regardless of how much stuff is on the key ring with your key, the weight doesn't force the lock cylinder to move one way or another.
But I still agree, it's a waste of time. For years cars have had lock cylinders and keys that present the same scenario for weight movement and never had an issue.
How about a factory push button start retro fit kit lol. Just kidding. How about a real lock cylinder fix.
