Default Battery Warning!

Ever since we got our first real snow fall and temp. fall here in Iowa, my Monte has been having this problem. I'll get in my car, turn it to the ON position...when I do this, my Battery Guage will go from half way and drop to just above the red. Also, the battery light comes on in the message center. However, She will still start everytime, only occasionally it will hesitate slightly. The battery is 1 year old as of this winter. Also, my car sits in an insulated garage every night, so I don't know if it has anything to do with the temp. or if that battery just needs a good charge? My old battery charger got left at the old house when I moved so I haven't been able to test that theory Any theories?

Do you have a way to monitor the voltage (accurately) while the car is running?

I wonder if the alternator isn't as high as it should be.
