I wish I could think about a V8 for mine. The cost just does not make sense. I'd rather beef up the V6 or just buy a GTO or something close to it.

When my 76 Monte had the stock 145-horse 350 2bbl, stock Turbo 350, stock 2 1/4-inch single exhaust and stock open 2.73 rear end I could take on some of those rice burners w/ no problem. Of course, that was about the first couple of years I owned my car and I was stupid and street raced a couple times. I once had two passengers and myself in my Monte and raced a rice rocket and beat him. I was probably doing close to 90. I've kept it strictly on the track now, where racing should always be kept. The motor might not have had a lot of horsepower, BUT had 250 foot pounds of torque.

I've since done an engine swap, tranny rebuild, dual 2 1/2-inch exhaust w/ Flowmasters, recently cut off both my cats (damn things melted down on me) and had an Eaton posi w/ 3.73's put in. I've been able to pull off a 14.945 @ 89.91. Traction is an issue, but everytime I've gone to the track I've gotten a little quicker each time. And that's not doing any tinkering with it prior to racing. If I could get the tires to hook I'd probably be able to pull off a mid-14. I am planning on a cam and lifter swap in the very near future so I'll probably nail low 14's (if I'm lucky high 13's).
