Default 86 monte really that slow?

i just got my 86 monte carlo on the road for the first time and i was messing around and i raced my buddy in his 95 mustang v6 5speed knowing i wouldn't win and got passed in when he shifted into 2nd. his mustang is completely stock with the fuel injected v6. and my monte has a stock 305. that hasn't had a tune up or oil change in over 2 yrs. but i just got it yesterday so i plan to give it a full tune up. and change the oils. but are monte carlos with stock 305's really that slow. i know it has 160 or less hp to the crank but damn a v6 mustang! hopefully a full free flowing exhuast a shift kit and a cam will help me out. 40hp from all that would be nice.

well i have a 84 monte carlo stock 305 4 carb, my dad gave to me and he bought it brand new and he said they rated them up around 275 horse and with the carb cover flipped its putting out about 20 more horse power. so id try the carb cover flipped.
he used to street race trans ams and hed be going over 120 mph and hed beat them evertime.
i think youd need a tune up.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the 84' 305 was only rated @ 180HP @ the flywheel. This covers years 1984-1988. The first model, 83' L69 305 produced 175HP. The difference between the 83 and the 84-88 is that the 84-88 was upgraded with the following parts to get it's extra HP:

Quadrajet 795 CFM 4BBL carburetor (E4MC - non-electric, E4ME - electric), an L-81 Corvette camshaft, and Camaro crossfire heads. The heads have 58cc chambers and produce 9.5:1 compression.

How much horsepower and torque is the stock SS Engine rated at?

* 1983
o 175 HP @ 4800 RPM (flywheel)
o 230 ft/lbs @ 3200 RPM
* 1984 through 1988:
o 180 HP @ 4800 RPM (flywheel)
o 225 ft/lbs @ 3200 RPM
* All horsepower (HP) readings are S.A.E. Net, measured at the flywheel of the engine, as installed, with a complete exhaust system and all accessories attached. This figure is measured on an engine dyno. It is not the horsepower at the rear wheels.

I wish I could. Those year Montes were some of the best looking in my opinion. Hang onto it and save up some cash. You can buy a 260 hp crate motor from Chevy for about $1400. Your intake, carb, etc... will all switch over. If you can dig deeper a 330 hp crate motor can be had for another grand.

one more question how much custom fabrication would be involved in swapping in a pontiac small block 400cui. is there a company that makes a kit to do this swap.

It should be a fairly straight foward swap, just make sure you get the tranny too. I put a 70 Chevelle 307 in a 81 Firebird that had a V6 and the only semi hard part was the driveshaft.

If memory serves me correctly, your year has a ton of room in the engine bay and you should not have too much modification to do for 400....

If you are talking non SS then you are down around 150hp. You have to remember you are talking about the smog congested mid-80's here where a 200hp Mustang was a powerhouse. The mid-high 15 second quarter mile times a 4th gen SS put down were very respectable for thier time. Non intercooled Grand Nationals were almost the same performance wise until 86/87. V6's and even 4cyl have made extreme improvements and many will walk all over a late 70's/80's V8 no problem.

The good thing is, as mentioned, a 350 upgrade is cheap and gives you lots more torque and hp to play with. I wouldn't bother modifying the 305 too much, unless it is parts that can be swapped later to a 350 when you can afford one (ie. headers)
