Turbos do create more power and everything, but I vote supercharged because of this:

I think that's a tough one, since it depends on what the goal is with the car, and what we're allowed to change.

What I mean is- if you were to build 3 engines for 500 horsepower - a larger CI NA engine, and two smaller boosted engines, I would prefer a large cubic inch engine running NA out of the 3. I like the linear, predictable power at all throttle positions- and never having to wait for any lag from anything. Also, driving around town tends to feel the best with a larger engine, especially at lower throttle inputs. IMO, that's the reason a lot of people do LS engine swaps into 240s, RXs, etc. Sure a big turbo 13B or SR20 could make the same peak power, but down low is just night and day. Plus, running a closer to stock big CI engine tends to give you better reliability than running a tiny engine with tons of boost and other mods.

However, if we're talking keeping the same base engine (like our V6s for example)- I think NA quickly becomes the worst option. To get big power, you need high compression, big cam, heavily ported heads, etc. The thing loses power down low, gets terrible gas mileage, and you have to really rev it up to get the power (which is still less than comparable boosted engines).

Between SC and turbo on our engines- that's a tough one. IMO, a positive displacement supercharger most closely resembles the power curve of a larger NA engine (ie more torque down low, less peaky ramp up effect)- but you still have the issue of running a low compression, low displacement engine when out of boost- and still have that odd transition where the bypass valve finally closes where you suddenly put a huge spike in your power curve.

I think turbos have become so popular because they work well for the kind of racing that most of us do. Being relatively heavy FWD cars, these cars don't tend to do great at auto X or on road courses- so most of us tend to drag race / street race - and that is where a turbo setup is really great - when you can get the turbo up to speed, and hold it at full boost through the race.

I think a good comparison of this was when I was in Vegas last at the exotic car driving deal at the short road course by the nascar oval. Two of the cars I drove that day were a GTR, and an SLS mercedes. Down the straight, they're in roughly the same ballpark as each other, but there are a few corners where you've been on the brakes hard for a good bit (ie totally off the throttle), and only have a second or two to get on the throttle before getting back on the brakes for the next corner- and the SLS was just so much faster through there. You had gobs of torque ready to go immediately when you hit the throttle, whereas the GTR just felt sluggish and mushy until the turbos ramped back up (which of course only left you a super brief window of full power since the next turn was approaching already).

Just my .02
