My monte is dead :(
Had to order the side case gasket for my trans through NAPA, should be there tomorrow noon so now the cleaning and painting of the trans will have to wait lol :p
also bought a new pan gasket and filter and some RTV
i bought black 2000 degree heat resistant paint for my exhaust manifolds, we'll see if they hold up
lol
going to take the UIM off of the L36 now and see what i find haha

well there's no going back now lol :p
i was able to get the motor inside the house incase of rain

Sludge!!!
damn dex cool, its not the coolant/oil sludge though and its only laying on the port entrance so thats good i guess. we'll see when i remove the heads tomorrow

i also removed the rockers and head bolts. i need to go buy a compressor for the springs, hopefully i can just rent it since im over $1100 in costs now!
all thats left to buy are the fluids so thats a relief lol oh and BTW the LIM gaskets did not look like the alum. ones
another question... which bolts will i need to apply thread sealant on? and which sealant do i buy? i saw a few diff ones when i bought some black RTV

Sorry, I'm not able to keep up with everything (I have some personal issues I'm tending to). But so far looks like you're moving right along and doing great!
I'm happy to see you're going with the aluminum LIM gaskets. You could try and sell off the nylon ones from the kit.... Not sure they are worth much, but you could try.

BTW - I've heard of using "thread sealant" on bolts for a head gasket, but I never have. I've heard of people using thread sealant on head bolts, but again, I never have.
I looked in the shop book and it says to use thread locker where instructed, but it did not indicate the need on the head bolts. Now, I suspect if you bought new head bolts, they have a red compound on the threads? If so, that's thread locker, that should be ALL you need.
As for the DEX build up, I'm willing to bet the engine did not get a regular coolant flush, plus that big glob is probably with the LIM did not have a port for coolant to flow into.
Get everything degreased. Heck when I did the heads on the 3100, I took them to a pressure washer (with a can of engine degreaser) and hosed them off something FIERCE!!
Keep it up, keep posting. I apologize if I "slip" away a bit (again, some personal issues going on), if you need something from me directly, PM me, I'm certain to get it and I can respond a bit faster and more direct.

and i'll probably just keep the nylon gaskets and maybe give em to someone who needs em

and yes i got new head bolts, they have blue compound on them but im talking about all bolts in general, which ones will i need to apply sealant on?
I'm definitely cleaning everything up for sure
i need to search around for torque specs now lol i also looked through the TB entrance on the UIM of my L36 and holy crap!!! it's full of oil!!

i'll probably remove the UIM tomorrow to show you guys lol i decided to not take it all apart since i have to take it back and get my core charge :p haha i just have to remove all the stuff i might need hopefully tomorrow lol

You can still crack open the oil pan on your old motor and check for anything out of sorts before you take the core in. If you do, see if there are pieces of broken metal. If you don't see that (but I have a feeling you will), wiggle the connecting rods. I wonder if one of them have some play.
And that "oily" gunk is sadly normal on the inside of the UIM and back of the TB.
As for thread sealant, I don't believe you need to worry about that on anything beyond the head bolts (and at that, I'm not so sure THAT'S required, but it's clearly on the new bolts).

And on my L36 it's not just oil gunk, its like a pool of oil in there lol the LIM looks completely full
When I took the LIM bolts off from the L26 they appeared to have some kind of orange compound on the threads, or was it just gunk? Lol
Also when I removed the trans bracket that bolts to the engine, one of the bolts on the trans started leaking oil when I removed it, would I apply sealant there just in case?
Btw I sent you an email Jason
More progress
yay!
That is some pretty gross sludge.
I can't find the boxes with my service manuals in them, I was going to look up tq specs and the need for thread locker but they are packed away somewhere still. Hopefully I can find them soon.

but I'm still wondering about that thread sealant. I know I remember someone mention it a few pages back lol but I can't seem to find it now
