Make sure the engine is cool. I believe you make need to remove the battery for clearance. Once that is done there is a silver clip that has to be reomve from the sensor that keeps it locked into the radiator. Once that is removed you can pull the sensor. Before removing the sensor put a bucket under this area to make sure that when you pull the sensor out it spills out into the bucket.

I know this works for the the LS's I want to say its the same for the SS's.

OKAY... I know WHERE the sensor is (on the drivers side under the thermostat housing on the 3800, thats 3.8L), and I know what size socket to pull it, I have done this procedure on a different model with no problem, but the 01 monte/impala has all these stupid motor mount locations and impact braces and what-not. The space is too tight to get most thick wrenches into and I cannot get on it with a deep socket because of the angle of the sensor. It is impossible to get on it with regular sockets because of that annoying little plastic piece on the sensor; if I put my wrench on it I can turn it maybe 20 degrees and then my wrench hits the motor mount and I have to pull it off... except I can't without turning the thing back 20 degrees... its like I need a special tool or something...

Coolant Temperature Sensor... thanks for the help everybody, I fixed it. Had to buy new tools for the job, but I fixed it. On that note, I am an amateur mechanic and since I was getting no temperature input on the dash and a coolant temperature code, I decided that the first thing I should try would be the Coolant temp sensor; I replaced it and still I get no change in temperature even on a hot day when I am driving a lot... so could the t-stat be causing this problem? How can I tell?
