My neighbor two doors down used to own a late model Cavalier. It was a 4 banger with a stick shift. He's done a LOT of with cars over the years (including building cars dedicated for the local speedway and drag strip). He modded the Cavvy some (lowered, added a flow master exhaust and I'm not sure what else). To my knowledge he was going for more of a fun "showy" type of car but more performance then stock.
A friend of his bought one of the earlier Colbalt SS models and from what I heard this guy spared NO expense and bought the best of whatever GM offered on it.
I heard a story about him and his friend got into a bit of draggin' on the freeway and the Cavvy was pulling away from the Colbalt SS with no problem. Now his friend is angry because he did not think his SS could be beat by that Cavvy and the reason it makes him angry is the guy with the Cavvy has a lower amount of total money into the car (this includes buying and modding the car).
I have no idea what the Cavvy would do with a larger car (like a stock v6). But this guy has bigger toys for competing. He's since sold the Cavvy.
