7th Gen ('06-'07): Rear Wheel Drive build thread, It is happening..
Greg: I have not spoken to Matt about the insulation. Just figured he do it. Good idea. Think I will bring it up. I did talk about leveling the back seat area with foam/cloth padding but that is not insulation. Greg you know I will be driving this car around just like any other aside from the small rise/bump in the hood, no one will be the wiser. I can almost guarantee you no one will give the car a second look and ignore it just like they do with SSV 1. Although on several occasions I have gotten the thumbs up every once in awhile. And that usually happens when I’ve out maneuvered someone. Funny someone the other day asked if my car was still the factory 3.8L. Had to laugh told it was the factory 5.3. People I don’t know don’t need too know. Sam

That is hilarious, the factory 5.3. Not that the hood, bead locks, NASCAR style exhaust location for cut outs are not enough visual indicators that something is amiss. Read where you drive it often, good for you. Took a great effort to build, would be sad to not let it live. You ever have it want to get away from you and were like woah nelly. Has to be comforting to have a bad enough Monte to drive while waiting for this very special build to be completed. That car will be truly amazing to your GM buddies who are fortunate to see it.
Agreed, make sure you bring up "Sound deadening" mat to Matt. I did my whole car myself, gets rid of rattles, buffers extraneous noise.
I like the idea of you building something for the back seat delete area. We both have the firewall, then a void. me I added a leveling floor board of 1/8th bright aluminum diamond plate. Under that removable plate lay the speaker wires, water meth lines, speaker crossovers etc. A clean look all in all, I was stumped on how to eloquently solve the irregular floor board left which the back seat deletion created. The new carpet kit did not cover whole area etc. under the back seat. So it was head scratching time, tormented on what to do there. Will be interesting to see your solution, suspect it will be pretty nice. Perhaps Matts body shop guy has an eye and idea for you. Quad NOS Bottle holder with led accent lighting, okay I admit I tend to go overboard.

Greg: If you look real close to some of my pictures on the cage and tin work on SSV II you can see that the back seat area is pretty flat and probably won't require much leveling (I hope) - just work around some sharp corners and the cage. On SSV 1 - the interior guys here Michigan did a great job of leveling/flattening the back seat area with padding, foam and some hard boards. My back seat area on SSV 1 is just like yours and took some creative thinking to put something together that looked nice. They blended the back flooring with the front carpet right at the base of where the back seat was with a vertical hard flat board and covered it in Factory-like (weight) carpet. The rear area is carpet from the deck lid all the way to the bottom of where the back seat ended - blended real nice and it looks okay to me. But you know me - I am not the prize show car kinda guy like you and close enough is usually good enough for me. If it looks like factory - that is fine with me. And to answer your question have I been surprised by my acceleration; I would be lying if I said no. At a full boost set at 18PSI at about 60+ MPH - I hit the throttle and if I am not paying attention - it will shock me at times - the car never stops pulling - I have yet to get to the point of where it stops pulling - too fast for street driving. And you know the traction issue we have with these cars - well, there is a sweet spot in the throttle push where I can launch the car without frying the tires and at times even after knowing how to do this, it still amazes me how SSV 1 can set you right back in your seat.
But as much as I love SSV 1 - I can't wait to get SSV II back. It will be a much different experience I am sure - RWD instead of FWD - guess I will just have to learn how to drive again. Take care SAM

Well the car is back. 98% of the job that was contracted has been completed. The fabricator’s health had deteriorated where he couldn’t do any more. There was only a couple small panels he just couldn’t finish. The last piece for the rear firewall deck and a small finishing strip in the trunk. Most importantly it’s back in Salt Lake and the builder will easily finish the last two pieces both of which are simple flat panels. Now to finish the car. Hooray!!

All the interior trim too? That will be awesome, going to totally be getting the nod of approval from everyone. Have you entertained the idea of having the sound proof matting installed everywhere? That may go along way in reducing some road sounds. Its called Dyna-Mat plus there are other similar products. Matt could have his monkey put it in before all your carpet is in at floor pans, trunk, doors, tranny tunnel etc.

You are all go and I'm all show. You just choose to be stealthy, you like to have a "Bait Car" , bring them in and wham shut the door on em. I have no false thoughts your Monte will be the "King Tiger" build.

Sure hasn't been much banter here lately - guess there hasn't been much to say - well I have some news - My dear friend Greg Hubbs (Zippy02) - has stopped in at the shop in Sandy and has taken about 100 new pictures of SSV 2 and put them on a thumb drive and is sending them to me - so once I get it and figure out how to post them - there will be some new pictures to see on my current build. That's it for now - the news for the day.
