Default Caliper

Im supposed to get my rims on Wednesday. I have a red MC and I am getting black rims with red trim. So I wanted to paint my calipers red to help create contrast. I have read a few threads on here about calipers but im not entirely sure yet. I bought the Dupli Color paint kit with the brush. I plan on painting on Monday because I dont have anywhere to go on Tuesday so I can use that day to let them dry. Does any one have specific tips and tricks that I should do? I know the most important step is the prep work I have a bristle brush and a drill attachment with the bristles. So I should just make them look as clean as possible? Use a degreaser? Can someone direct to what parts actually get painted and dont? Google Image Result for http://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/disc-brake-diagram.jpg How far back do I paint? I dont have jack stands so I was thinking use the jack that came with the car to change a tire have one side of the car lifted take the rim paint it 3 coats let dry 20 min put the spare tire not tight not to drive or anything just so i can lower the car and then put the jack on the other side and just work my way like that? also how do i get to the lug nuts on these rims?http://www.google.com/imgres?q=monte...r:6,s:70,i:369 do i just pry up that cover with a flat head screw driver?

DO NOT USE THAT JACK. You need to use a proper jack and jack-stands whenever you do anything like this.

Also I would recommend the G2 paint kit. They warranty it for life.

Paint what you saw in that google image that was brown. Be careful around all of the bolts, as when the paint dries it could make it hard to remove bolts.

Prep work is key, you are correct. I think I spent around 45 minutes cleaning up each caliper with a drill attachment. Just try to get all of the surface rust off and then shoot it down with brake cleaner.

I second the jack stand warning! DO NOT USE THE JACK WITH THE CAR! This jack is for changing a tire and is MINIMAL support. Doing what you want to do should be done with a good jack and jack stands. Find a harbor freight store and you can usually find a set of jack stands on sale for 20 a set.

I took my calipers off and prepped them by stripping the paint (with a sand blaster and wire wheels), then sent off for powder coating. I love how they turned out. I also had to re-build them as a result AND re-bleed the system (which is good anyways, that fluid does age, so I bled them until it came out like new).

End result, I'm very happy with, but getting there was a LOT of work.

Many, like Chibi have been happy with the G2 kit. Some removed the calipers from the car, cleaned and sprayed them (by NOT taking the caliper piston out, did not require a rebuild of the caliper).

I used brake cleaner and then soap and water and a brush to clean them up. I used aluminum foil to mask off the lines and bolt heads and anything else I didn't want paint on. Also on the subject of jacks, I bought a small floor jack and jack stands for less than 50 at walmart a while ago so if you dont have a harbor freight you could check there.

I've had good luck with just hi-temp duplicolor spray paint. I didn't remove them from the car, but just hung them with a piece of wire from the suspension. I definitely spent some time with the drill and a wire wheel prepping them. I painted them two years ago and they still look great

I would 2nd the G2 paint kit - I have used the Duplicolor kit on another car - drove it in the winter and they started chipping within a year (and I prepped them correctly). I have the G2 kit on my 03 Monte and have painted the calipers years ago and they still look great!
