ultra-rare ZL1 option, this all-aluminum engine became the rarest and most expensive engine option in GM history. According to Chevrolet production records, only two Corvettes were built with the ZL1 option in 1969. While several owners have claimed to own a ZL1, only one has been able to prove it-until now. This is the true story of the second documented ZL1

Amazing to see all the truely different performance options back then. Now a days you get 2 maybe 3 engine options an a bunch of lame apperence options. It's cars like those ZL1's that always catch my eye.

The first Chevy V8 was not what many think.

Just after Chevrolet became part of GM in the 1917, it produced a V8 powered, 4 passenger roadster and a 5-passenger touring car. The year was 1918. The engine was an OHV, 288 cuin, 35hp, V8.

Admittedly, the more common answer for this question is: 1955 when the first small-block V8 appeared in the Chevrolet passenger car and, later in the year, in the Corvette.
