Some types of nuts are actually good for you because they contain Omega3. 
Depending on what you buy a lot of the food budget can be absorbed by convenience. When we used to purchase a lot of ready made heat-n-eat foods we found we were spending more versus buying the ingredients and spending a few minutes preparing the meal. The home prepped meals are not only less expensive, but they are better for you and don't contain as many preservatives and calories.
