Tips on Pumping Gas
Ok.. From my experiences working in aviation fuel.
The first four.
1. False. All pumps in canada must be electronically compensated to 15'c or they will not be certified by the wieghts and measures act. I cant speak for the states.
2. False. All pumps in canada must have an in pump fuel filter. Its usually mounted on the hose, closest to the pump as possible. As well, there is an internal filter designed to protect the pumping system from debris. They are usually made by fram, or WIX.
3. False. Gasoline tanks do not have a membrane anymore. Prior to 1980 they did, now they use an integrated fuel/water separator as it is more efficient, just like on diesel trucks. Underground tanks are sealed units, with a vent valve as per the fisheries act to protect the enviroment.
4. Debateable. Most nozzles in canada do not have an active vapour recovery system installed. Half empty half full all depends on your diving style, and what kind of driving you do.
As for GPD's.
1. Our underground 102,000L tank will rise about 4 inches from -5 to plus 15+ in the course of the day. Hence why all of our measurments are taken at night, to have a consistent reading. If you measure our tank at 6am, vs noon when we do our water checks, there can easily be a variation of almost 5-7000L! This is also why our tanks and every fuel tank on a non vented system (90% of diesel trucks) have caps on them that read,"DO NOT FILL MORE THEN 90% CAPACITY). An increase in tempurature will cause the fuel to expand.
2. This is correct, and a common statement. All gas is just that. Gas. Certain companies will request corrosion inhibitors and certain amounts of other chemicals to be added later, to make their own. Its like ordering pizza. Two people can order pizzas with different things on them from the same place. But beneath it all will be nothing but pizza.
3. Correct, and incorrect. Magic "As seen on TV" chemicals will not work. If it did work, everyone would know already. Most of these chemicals are added into your fuel already by government or enviromental guidelines. Some additves have been added in the past such as lead, MBTE, etc, ethonol. Some agents are in the fuel already, gas companies know if you can notice your getting more MPG from thier pump, you'll likely return to thier pump.
4. Correct, but incorrect. Yes, it has been proven that carrying the extra wieght around does burn more gas, in fact roughly a 1/3 of a cent per litre. On my tank, thats rougly a savings of 12 cents, which I can burn off by accellerating and getting back up to highway speed. lol
The real tips GPD put up are all true and do work. The major one is using your foot. Look up hypermiling for a really good example of it. Some drivers can almost double thier milage using these techniques.
