Six gas mileage myths

Car idle high when they are first started on a cold engine...This keeps the oil pressure up.
I lean way more towards letting its warm up is a better thing than not warming up. I just don't think long warm ups are neccesary at all. And I always drive my car easy until it is at FULL operating temp.

I agree with MaMonte myself....
The thing is, modern cars aren't built to take off cold like some people think.. they are built to TOLERATE it, not the same as built to do it... auto manufacturers petty much figured out that pepole are going to drive as soon as they get the car going... their just going to throw it in gear and go. Modern materials and more precise tolerances mean that there isn't as much heating up and expansion going on as their was 40 years ago... so warming up was just more important at one time than it is now... not necessarily not important at all today.
I've noticed oil weight has a lot to do with the start up. My Torino has about 40 lbs or so when it first starts and is idling... when the oil warms up, half that or slightly under at idle, but it runs on straight 30, not a multigrade oil.

...LoL `Member's, I knew when I posted this thread topic's that it would invite some interesting comments/posts , and it has....
Thanks everyone for your words/posts....It's amazing what some people get paid to write...
Does that mean that you do not have to ever change your air filter no matter how dirty it gets and just let your car's computer adjust ?

I was thinking the exact same thing when I read it! Changing the air filter in your car is one of the simplest, easiest, and most important maintenance issues to fix to keep your car running at optimal condition, achieving MAXIMUM MPG. I don't know who wrote this "Gas Myths" but I bet he needs to change his filter.

i have a 94 mercury cougar with a rebuilt motor with 350,975 miles befor the rebuild and 395,896 after the rebuild. i kind of have to let it warm up for at least 2 to 5 minutes due to the rebuild and to make sure every thing is getting lubed in the engine. but in the monte and the silvarado and my mustang i let it idle down in about 2 minutes. the cougar gets 32 to 38 mph on a 4.6 v8 with the same gearing that our monte's have the 2.86 rear same as what it is in my monte for the drive gear.even befor the rebuild on the mercury it was getting the same gas miles 32-38 with ease. i do believe it is all about the mantienence of the car if it is up to par as in cleaan oils threw out the vehicle as in clean trans fluid clean engine oil both synthetic as well as a good tune up as well as a clean filter there should be a steady great gas milege from the start of the car's life to when it is no longer be able to drive it as in drive it till the whells fall off. it should last a really long time with a head strong 32-36 mpg. my monte if not pushing not going over 3300 rpms i get 35-36 mph on the high way and city. same with the mercury. about 32 for my truck and the same for my mustang thats fully built if i go with the same gearing for my truck and mustang that my mercury has i probable get the same gas milage

oh i did forget the amarican car manufacturer thinks the cars they make are throw aways any way hens the low value and cheap parts. if they think an avrege person starts and drives there vehicle right away they are going to do two things. 1.buy a new car 2. get a new power train that is why there is people out there putting up myths of gas milege
