Im sad im about to go through the same thing a 3rd time, so i understand your pain greg. 
, I lost the dog I was basically born with, it was a birth present to my mom, then I lost my husky i got when I was little and im soon going to lose my golden retreiver from aging..shes still trooping though ! Gonna take her to the vet soon for all her check ups! But on the bright side i got a spunky new husky whos the smartest dog ive ever met, litterally.

She lived a long life, you made the right decision. Watching dogs like that is even worse than seeing one peacefully put to sleep.
Hope she is up there doing all the same things she used to do, exploring. Sorry for your loss.
