One thing to note, you said it has a 305 v8 in his Monte. Odds are that same base motor was used in a LOT of GM cars.
I know in relation to 3rd gen F-bodies, GM had a 305 H.O. (L69) that I believe ran from '82 - '86. The regular 305 (also known as the LG4) ran about the same time (don't quote me on that, I'm a little rusty on my 3rd gen engine facts). I have an '84 Z28 Camaro (in pieces) that has a L69. It runs on a Rochester QuadraJet carb. When I was driving the Camaro, I had a friend rebuild the carb once (and he did an OUTSTANDING job, cleared up some minor issues). I understand a lot of people dubbed the Rochester QuadraJet to be "Quadra-Junk". I never recall having a serious problem with it (but I could have just been lucky).
