Back to the Fan turning on. If it is not electric fans, then it is on a oil/hydraulic clutch system. It will always turn, but slipping thru the clutch. When the engine gets hot, and the air coming thru the radiator warms up the clutch, the fan engages directly and turns 1-to-1 with the water-pump pulley. When this happens, it sounds like it turns on.

I drove an 87 Aerocoupe for 10+ years. Daily driver for over 130k miles. One of the best rides I ever had.
My '86 now is the most fun.......
