That Lee Roy article was a good, albeit long read Duane. I knew nothing about him

Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day: A jubilant young Jeff Gordon celebrates his 1997 Daytona 500 win.

What made it a big deal particularlyr was several things. At the time, he was the youngest Daytona 500 champion ever. What you can't see in this shot is that it was a Hendrick 1-2-3 finish at the end. Plus, this was right after Hendrick was placed on house arrest for the scandal involving bribing Honda officials to get more than his standard allotment of cars. He was under house arrest instead of prison because he allegedly had leukemia.... at a pretty convenient time if we're to be pretty honest about it.

From Greg Fielden's NASCAR Chronicle.

No love for Jeff Gordon and Mike Joy?????

Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day: Pete Hamilton in teh pits in Daytona, 1970... a really cool shot of the Superbird. As stated with earlier pictures of this cat, he was the man who went on to win it all.

I like this photo becasue the crisp, clean color photography reflects how it's so late in the race, the shadows are getting longer, and the front of hte car has practically been sand blasted....

This is a Don Hunter photograph.

Not a huge Rainbow warrior fan Duane !
He looks like a little kid in that Picture.... Looks like he just woke up from his nap!

Mike Joy on the other hand....Looks good!
Why was Hendrick involved with Honda anyway???
???? HONDA ????

Thats an unusual amount of sand blasted debris!
Under todays standards you wont see that kinda sand blasting of the nose!

Great Pics Duane!

Oh yeah.... it had nothing to do with NASCAR.

Hendrick actually built his money up through dealerships... I even bought the cowl vent seal to keep my Monte from leaking water from Hendrick Chevrolet in Durham, NC. He owns a lot of dealerships in the NC/SC area.... some Chevrolet, some not.

At one time, he was the youngest General Manager of a Chevrolet owned dealership in the country... then he built his own network....

Here is a story about it...

FALL OF A MEGADEALER RICK HENDRICK'S LEGAL WOES--AND A BIG HEADACHE FOR HONDA - April 28, 1997

Then when it came time to go to prison, his doctors mysteriously diagnosed him with leukemia and he had to spend a year under house arrest with no contact with his dealerships, race teams, or anything else he owns.....

Bill Clinton gave him a full pardon for his actions in 2000.

Its no wonder I didnt know anything about it.....
In April of 1997 I was still in a Coma from that Tragic accident when we were hit on our Harley by that underage drunk driver!
That killed my wife and took my leg...

Classic NASCAR Photo of the Day: David Pearson and his crashed 1978 Mercury Montego in the Daytona 500 of the same year..... not the one that crashed en route to victory, unfortunately.

The crickets after the Gordon picture is hilarious!

Good point on the Pearson photo STUMPMI. What is that strange material that front bumper is made of? Doesn't look like any kind of fiberglass or plastic I've seen before...

The outer "frame" is chrome... the US Federal Government required all cars to have steel bumpers and be able to stand a 5 or 10 mph crash without damage in the 1970's, so the yahd this strange rubber compound behind the bumpers to make them "springy".

Can't really see it any of hte good pictures of a stock car...
