Default Wild Temp Gauge - not reseting after car is turned off

Alright guys

The car is NOT overheating... I'll drive to where I need to go, car gets up to operating temperature (temp gauge fine at half)

I'll get to where I am going,Turn the car off.

I come back out several hours later and when I hop in my car I notice that my temp gauge is still at half, or a quarter.

I start the car up, start driving, operating temp is/has to be wrong. It will be off by how much it was stuck at when I car went off.

I've tried turning the car off and back on, sometimes I can get it to start far enough down that it doesn't bother me, but tonight... my gauge went all the way around CLOCKWISE...

Thoughts?

My guess is the stepper motor in your instrument cluster is failing. I believe someone on MCF documented how to change it (just have to be handle with a soldering iron).

That would make sense.

Does that control all of the gauges? I had a similar issue with my speedometer (that only happened once) but my speed was 30-40mph over what it really was.

Each gauge has it's own stepper motor. Sadly, they have been known to go bad in our cars (so this issue is not uncommon).

X2 what the maniac said, sounds like the telltale signs of the stepper motor going.

I have an 01 Monte Carlo you can be driving it down the road the temperature gauge will read fine the AC works great then randomly you will lose both temperature gauge and AC the check engine code reads low voltage input to temperature sending unit you can pull the PCM fuse the car will die you can start the car back up with some hesitation and everything has reset and works again I am trying to get to the bottom of this can anyone help

This should be it's own thread. But to give you some feed back, I'd really quit on pulling the PCM fuse if you can. What is the actual code numbers your check engine light is throwing? Since both the temp and the AC cut out, it makes me suspect a ground that is shared by both items is bad. You can usually google the code and get some good feedback on it.
