Default What is Trac?

Hello, I am new on the forums, hoping to get insight into my car. I have a 2001 Monte Carlo (Not SS). I have a button that says Trac off but no clue what it does.

Also when I brake hard, my car skids and it sounds like abs. It also says Traction Active. I have no clue but when I click Trac Off, I don't think it does that anymore.

The trac off button lets you turn off your traction control. with it on you cant spin your tires for very long before the car cuts its self back. pushing the button will light up the "trac off" light in the dash but you will be able to go do a big smokey burn out(if you really want to) and the traction active simply means that the car is taking action to keep from spinning or sliding under braking...helpful at all? welcome to the site

My '99 has an active traction control system (which one cannot turn off) unlike your newer cars ('00+) which has a passive system that can be overridden...I thought something was wrong at first when I bought mine and I couldn't spin the tires too much (even with the bald yokohamas) but I took it to the dealership and they told me about my trac system...special ordered (I guess).....oh well...it saves money paying for tires....
