Question Transmission Diagnosis without Engine

Hello MC Enthusiasts! I have a 2001 Monte Carlo SS I had to take the engine out due to the engine blowing up . Although, I was wondering because before the engine went out. My dad (The one driving the car) said the OD doesn't work. That the car doesn't go into OD. Now before I go buy a new engine (I've got to do that regardless). I was wondering if there was a way of diagnosing the transmission while there's no engine in the car. I don't know if there is, but if there is, I would appreciate it if anyone would let me know

Thank you for reading this!

Not really. The problem is it's electrical over hydraulic control. Without the converter spinning to make pressure / without signals to command the hydraulics to do stuff, youre not going to get much useful info. Certainly you can test impedance across sensors and stuff like that, but thats about it.

IMO if you know it's down a gear for sure - pull it now. You're not going to get an easier chance to do it. Even if you're a couple grand into a rebuild, its better than putting a fresh engine in only to lose the whole transmission a few months later.

Default Diagnosis

Tough to achieve without being able to see data but I’d say it’s a shift solenoid, problem with the OD band or apparently it’s very common on the pre -03 trans to have a worn out spline on the 4th gear clutch hub that causes this. There is very likely a resistance spec on the shift solenoid for you to test it for a short or open circuit with a multimeter to rule that out. I’m sure Gm would have the spec. May have to call service and find the right guy to ask. Once that’s ruled out you pretty much know it has to come apart. IMO
